Day, S.M., Thomas Crowe r was charged with receiving orders for liquor iu tho no-license district of Ashburton. from Thomas Holmes and' from Harold Toomer, and wit hselling liquor jn a no-liccnse district' to Thomas Holmes. On the first count he was. convicted arid discharged, and oil the second he was r fined £2 and costs, and on the third fined £20 and costs. THE HAWERA SEAT. ' Hawera, July 17. Mr John Driver, Opposition candidate, addressed a meeting 'at Hawera last' night. The address was of a preliminary , character. He said there was not much difference between the Government and the Opposition, except upon the question of. finance. Sound finance -was wanted. He favoured exclusion of the Chinese, the freehold tenure, retention of tho totalisaior,' and said he ' would support no-license if a majority of. the eleo tors favoured it. He opposed Bible reading in schools, and favoured Legislative Councillors being elected by the provinces. The candidate received <yvote of thanks. , ARBITRATION COURT. • Timaru, July, 17. A - sitting of the Arbitration Court was held here this morning, when breaohes of the carpenters' and threshing millers' awards were dealt with. B. Butcher was' fined £2 for failing to pay' the carpenters' award rates when getting' some additions to his' private residence. • G. Collett was fined £5 for failing to'indenture an apprentice. Rive'arid Cochrane, carpenters, were fined £2 far failing to pay,award, rates to;P. Cochrane arid J, Watt; .who were ordered to pay' Court costs for, accepting such' wages. H. Hardwick was-fined'£2-for a. breach of iJie threshing millers' award in,failing to"keep;a pass"bodk in the galley. • J. ; T. Grant, A. Maxwell, and D. M'Millan ' were ' fined '£2 for leaving a threshing : mill. 'without giving. notice.' Tho case; was brought' at' the instance "of'..'the' Labour Department. 1 In a case in which a firm of carpenters were charged-with'failing to indenture two'apprentices, judgment 'was reserved,' Mr._ Kihnferney,. for defendants, raising the point that it would have been illegal to indenture in this case, as at,the expiry of five years the apprentices would have" been- twenty-one and twenty-three years' of age respectively. One compensation case waa heard. A girl'of fifteen years', working in a steam laundry, claimed £150 damages; her left hand having been crushed and burned between steam rollers so as to render it practically useless. . Judgment was reserved. TRAMWAY INQUIRY. Auckland, July i 7. 'Tho tramway inquiry was concluded this afternoon. After further, evidence had been called in support, of the cases put forward by the Union and the Company, Mr. J; j; Walklate, general manager for the Company, himself gave evidence,' bringing his case; to a-close.
