THE BRITISH TEAM. TO-DAY'S MATCH AT AUCKLAND. (lii telegraph—raiiss association.) - Auckland, July 17. Tho.'.football match, Britain v. Auckland, to be played to-morrow, is creating tremendous interest, and a largo attendance is expected. The Auckland team is very strong, and confident of victory. The British team will be as follows;— Dyke, yassall, Tnan Jones, M'Evedy, Laxon, Williams, Harding, Dibble, Morgan, Down, Hind, Smith; J. F. Williams, ana Thomas. The fifteenth man will bo chosen to-morrow. The team, is not considered a strong side, a number of prominent members being laid up with. injuries. Six of tho players who took part in the second test aro unable from this cause to take part to-morrow. Tho forwards are considered the strongest portion :of the toam. It is expected that a fine game will eventuato. The weather has been fino to-day, with a drying wind, and at time of telegraphing there is every prospect of a fine day. Tne fifteenth man will probably bo chosen from J. (Ponty) Jones or Chapman. • • „ • Arrangements have been made for tho team to leavo by special train for Rotorua at 8 o'clock to-morrow evening. .The referee (Mr. Charters) ; appointed for to-morrow's match has not arrived in Auckland owing to. the bad weather'on tho West' Coast, _ and it is doubtful if he can now arrive in time for the match. Mr. Gallagher to-night stated that it was his intention to quarter tho Now Zealand team (tho southern portion of which arrive in Auckland on Sunday) in the city, in order that a;; practice- may bo had at Alexandra Park every day next week. Tho third tost match promises to' bo a great struggle, for tho Britishers hope to have a fino side in good order for that game. THE TARANAKI MATCH: A GRIEVANCE. Auckland, July 17. A grievance is expressed by some members of the British team regarding the Taranaki match! It. is stated' that the game was really a draw, the reason given for this assertion being that one of the Taranaki forwards was' injured, and Dr. M'Evedy and Smith were attending to him when the ball went out of bounds. The ball was put in play quickly, enabling Dive to raco over unopposed,. The state that the incident is quite consistent with' the bad luck that has pursued;them during their tour of the Dominion. New Plymouth, July 17., •In' connection with the Auckland telegram rela.ting to the complaint of tho Britishers over thbir loss in tho. Taranaki match, the "Taranaki -News" says:—Tho statement is misleading. Dive did not run over unopposed. , Ho raced neck and neck with Vassall : and Dyke, and much to the surprise of everyone beat them. .It is true two of the BritiShors, stopped playing just before the hall oas whipped out by Coleman, but even if M'Evedy and Smith had been in their right positions it is improbable that the score would have been averted, so smartly was the hair taken by' Hunter and transferred to Dive.. The movement was electric in its suddenness, and had Dive been collared Cameron was lying handy, and probably would have got over.- It is unfortunate (says the "News',') that the Britishers should tako the defeat in the spirit they evidently aro. Tho referee did not blow his whistle to stop the game,': and if two of tho visitors stopped playing for.'the nonce it was their own loss, and should not be mado an excuso for the Britishers' inability to win a match iu which all impartial critics agree Taranaki held the advantage." Taranaki won by playing to the whistle. . 'Britain lost by neglecting it. TO-DAY'S -MATCHES. At the Athletic Park this afternoon the' contest for tho local Rugby, championship will be advanced another stago On Ground No 1 Molrose will do battle with Oriental, and these being the two leading teams considerable interest attaches to tho gamd. On. Ground No 2 Petono will play Poneke, and a close contest should result- Tho chief match next week will be that between Oriental and Poneke. -
