The evideupe' of the .wife was remarkable. ■ Sho . alleged that she learned her husband was deserting' her and-going; to Queensland by asking the Postmaster at' Burke's Pass for a letter that she had seen her husband writing; that ho asked no questions, and that sho took the. letter to tho hotel and-read it, and then posted.it again. The letter, received by the brother .of tho .accused and produced in Court, contained no -'reference,--to any ' indention to leave the Dominion or desert his wife. -Thomson was at his work—he has a twelve months' engagement—when arrested, and his wife ; had come .to Milton for family reasons. It was admitted that the parties had not got on well together for years. Mr, Macgregor said it was remarkable that a warrant should bo issued .under the circumstances, antV it\was incrcdible that a postmaster wbuid give a letter to a woman who was- a completo stranger. His Worship said the warrant had been issued by a J.P. Had it come before himself, ho would have been" very particular to be sure that the evidence was strong enough' to justify him in issuing a warrant.
