TECHNICAL EDUCATION.

PALMERSTON WANTS A GRANT. Palmerstou North lias a technical school with .-a 1 roll number of 434, but it lias no school building iu which to accommodate the pupils. It has acquired a site at a cost of £1450, the money for which was raised by local subscription. Now it desires, a building upon the vacaut section. Yestorday Mr. W. T. Wood, M.P., and Mr. Walter Rutherford (chairman of the Technical School Board) waited upon the Minister for Education (tbo Hon. 6. Fowlds). Mr. Rutherford said they had secured the site oa the suggestion of tbo Minister, who had said tho Government would holp thoso who helped themselves. In the interests of technical education in thejr town they must havo a building of proper sizo. Already they wore refusing enrolment, and they could opon up with a total roll of 600. Tho Borough Council had given ton acres for a high school site. Six thousand fivo hundred pounds was tlio estimated cost of the building they proposod to erect. (The Minister whistled.) Mr. Fowlds, after hearing furthor arguments, said that the Board should haro obtained a grant of land from tho Borough Council, and then utilised tho money collected for the building, upon which they would liavo got a subsidy. £1450 would be the outside tho Government could 'give, with another £1450 by way of subsidy. The Education Department expected Borough Councils to provide sites, and then the Government would give it grants. Ho would seo what could be done. _ ■ Tho deputation also asked for a grant of £200 for sanitary arrangements at tho school. Since the sewer had been extended to tha school the authorities had given notice that tho connection must be maae. The Minister again promised considoraton.
