IBY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.I 9 . BREAKING AND ENTERING. Tlmaru, July 5. Three cases of breaking and entering were reported to the police yesterday morning, at two bakeries and a confectioner's. At one baker's £7 at the other; 305., was stolen. The confectioner's' till was broken, but it contained nothing. The offences are supposed to bo the work of juveniles. ■ STORE AND DWELLING-HOUSE BURNED. Kokitika, July 5. Dee Bros.' general store, with attached dwelling, was completely destroyed by firo early tliis morning. Tho adjoining premises iVere somewhat damaged. Dee Bros.' insurances-are: £300 in the New Zealaiid and £150 in tho North Queensland Offices,but the damago_ considerably exceeds the insurances. The inmates of the • bililding had a very narrow cscape. HOCKEY. AUCKLAND v. TARANAKI. Auckland, July 5. Auckland met and defeated Taranaki at hockey in tho first Challenge Shield match of tho season yesterday by 3 goals to 1. The match took place at tho Polo Ground, Rcnraera, and the rains of the past week had made tho turf heavy and 'sticky. •, The weather was 'unfavourable, but 1000 spectators were present. During tho first- spell both teams scored a goal, and play was very even, but in tho second half Auckland had much tho bettor of it, their forwards exhibiting great paco and Masoi. shooting two brilliant goals. Tho goals in the first spell were scored by Barry (Auckland) and Fagan (Taranaki). Mr. E. E. Madden; of tho local Referees' Association, controlled tho game in good style. •

A valedictory social was tendered Mr. A, Fraser at Taihape last night on the eve of his retirement from the Public Works Department after thirty-seven years' service, the -latter part of which has beeir spent on the Main Trunk construction.
