' RECENT UTTERANCES BY BISHOP. NELIGAN. . '. ' . (BY TEIjEGBATH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, July '3. The recont Utterances of Bishop Neligan in hiigland havo been tho causo of a lavish'expeniliture of eloquence, and spondance. The latest protest comes ■ from the' Auckland Educational Institute. Miss Shrewsbury,' in bringing the mattor forward, Baid that she understood from the newspapers: that Bishop Neligan had' stated that'tho name of God was not allowed to bo mentioned in. tho New Zealand schools. . Sho wished to know whether this assertion had received any contradiction - from ' the Institute.; Tho President (Mr. C. R. Munro) replied .in-the negative, and added .that he thought the host thing to do was to treat such'remarks with contempt. No one would take much notico : of such assertion?.' ■ > Miss Shrewsbury ivas of opinion -that the Bishop's remarks- on' Paganism, etc., might weir be ignored, but'tho other matters to whiob she had referred seemed to imply that there: was a regulation .forbidding all reference to'tho Deity in our schools. In view of the present controversy in England, such an assertion might bo used against the Education Act.' Sho would_ challenge Bishop Neligan to'substantiate his statement, for it was evident that ho knew nothing about tho Now Zealand Education Act, the schools, or the teachers. (Applause.) In common fairness to the Government under which thoy worked his 1 statement should not pass unchallenged. She moved a resolution authorising an official denial of Bishop Neligan's assertion. Mr. Murray secondod tho motion,' whioh was carriod unanimously.
