HOURS OF SHOP ASSISTANTS.
AN AUCKLAND CASE. (BV TELEGRAPH—I'itKSS ASSOCIATION.') Auckland, July 1. Ernest. Jackson, a shopkeeper of Newmarkot, pleaded guilty this jnorning to two charges brought against him by Mr. Slianaghan, Inspector of. Shops and Factories,' of having employed assistants for more than tho statutory 52 hours por week. Mr. Shanaghan said that tho case was' a pretty bad oite. . Jackson, who kept a - fish .shop, having kept the assistants in question, WQrking up to as many as 8G hours a week,' in somo cases paying them more and in others paying them but tho ordinary wage. " It seems to bo a deliberate easo Bf. employing girls long hours, and by offering them higher wages simply bribing them to work in defiance of the law," commented tho Magistrate, who went on to emphasise the necessity of administering a law that was made for tho benefit of tho whole community strictly, and fairly. "In my opinion, the employee who connives* at tho. evasion of tho law by working over hours should bo prosecuted with his master," ho added, in fining Jackson £2 10s. and costs on each charge..
