MAULED BY A TIGER. Christchurch, June 29. Mr. Leo Acland, who was badly mauled by a tiger while hunting in India some time ago, arrived in Christchurch yesterday, accompanied by Dean Harper and Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Reeves. His friends will be glad to learn that 'Mr. Acland has almost / entirely recovered from the effects of the unfortunate encounter. When ho left Colombo for Melbourne it was feared-that ha . would have' to undergo another operation, but he made such good progress oil the voyage that further surgical attention was riol necessary. At Melbourne he was joined bj . Mr. and Mrs. Reeves, and during a month'l stay in Australia his health was greatl) benefited. Mr. Acland intends to settle ii ' Christchurch for some time at least.

CHARGE OF MURDER. Nelson, June 29. . The trial of Olaf Halinen and Anders Anderson, charged with the murder at Westport, ou May S, of Ernest Jobii Bourkc, was cpntinued at the Supremo Court to-day, when .evidence for the defence was given by a number of witnesses, being mainly of a corroborative nature. The hearing of the evidence has now extended over six days, and is still unfinished. It is expected that the remaining, witnesses will be disposed of to-morrow.

DUNEDIN FIRE INSURANCES. Dunetiin, Juno 29. The total insurances on the Drapery Supply Association buildings amount to £16,000. not £20,000.

LEPER STATION. Chrlstchurch, June 29. It is understood that a third patient will take up his abodo at the Leper Station on Quail Island about the end of this week. Great secrecy regarding the matter is being observed by the authorities, but it is known that a third cottage is at present being erected close to the other two on tho island. F, Waymouth stated at the Arbitra? tion Court this morning that, owing to stock not maturing as anticipated, consequent upon the hot dry weather experienced in January last, the two freezing companies were this year 800,000 short of the number of sheep killed last year.' shipment; OF SPECIE. Auckland,'. June 29. Specie to. the value of £59,950 was forwarded to London by the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's steamer Kararaea, which left Auckland yesterday. The National Bank shipped seventeen: boxes of bullion, and the Mines Trust, Limited, eight bars of bullion and ten boxes of gold, which latter alone ia valued at £40,900. THE TIMBER TRADE. v.- Creymouth, June 29. .The remarks of .Mr..-Loylandj -of ,tho-,firm-. of Leyland and O'Brien, timber merchants, of Auckland, published in. the local press, wherein ho asserts' that his firm.cannot get sufficient New Zealand' timber to supply their customers, and are forced to import timber from Australia and America, are keenly resented by local sawmillers, who state that they are quito prepared to supply Mr. Leyland, or any other firm, with millions of feet per month. The cutting capacity of the West Coast mills is quite equal to five million foot of riiriu per month, 'while orders at the present time do not represent half that quantity. The . principal reason, it is alleged, why merchants of New Zealand are buying Oregon is because it is cheap, although so far none of them seem inclined to admit the fact. DUNEDIN HOTEL/CASE. Dunedln, June 29. Mr. Justice Williams found for defendant in his reserved judgment in the case of Annie Paterson v. W. J.
