No social nows of the week will compare in interest with the announcement that the Wellington bakers' employees have gone out on strike. The head of the house will miss his toast at breakfast-time, the mistress will mourn for her delicately cut broad and buttqr at afternoon tea, and tho general will miss the cheerful "yawup" of tho baker's boy and his thunderous < hammerings on the back door. - For simple evening tea there shall be substituted the high-tea with merit dishes, and for the schoolboy's luncheon sandwiches of yore, he shall rejoice in chunks of cake and sausage rolls. In fact, that remedy of the little princess will be generally applied. The little French princess watching from a palace window as an angry mob of starving people marched and stormed arid threatened asked 1 why they were so angry, and when her governess said it was because they had no bread to eat, then said the child, "Why don't they eat cake?" Fortunately for the Wellington children, it is only the breadmakers who havo struck. There will still be a profuse supply of cake. As a matter of fact, nearly half the bakeries in Wellington will bo kept going, for in so' many the work ■:s ' done by .the - baker himself and members of the family,' though' there will bo a shortage of bread, there will not. bo a famine. ■
