BETTERMENT OF THE MAORI.
PROPOSED AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE. (bi telegraph—press association.) Auckland, June 26. As a result of its recent session, the Native. Land Commission has recommended that communal farms should bo set aside for the education of the young Maoris in agriculture. ■ Sir Robert Stout, President of tho Commission, states that that body has recommended tho Rotorua Maoris to take up agriculture, and as a result the Ngatiwhakano tribo has decided to set apart 1000 acres for an agricultural collcgo. Mr. Monfries, on behalf of tho Presbyterian Mission, lias intimated that that organisation would bo willing to appoint him manager of such a college, to appoint other instructors, and to ercct a building if some term of occupation was fixed. Mr. Monfries has also said that tlio land would remain Maori proporty, and any profits would go to tho owners. The college will bo undenominational, and the Anglican clergyman and ono of tho leading chiefs (a Roman- Catholic) aro agreeablo to the proposals. Tho'Commission has mado a report to tho Government, and this will probably be disclosed when Parliament meets. The Native Land Commission cxpccls to finish dealing with the King Country landß about August 3, and will then visit tho Thames and CorojnuidaL. I
