OPERA BOUSE. "" Yet again did tho curtain at tho Opera House rise on a full house, and Mr. Rickards's' first-class Vaudeville Company again took the place by storm. The Klos Sisters and the Artois Brothers were the outstanding features. A now programmes will be substituted on Saturday night. THEATRE ROYAL. There was again a very large attendance at the Theatre : Royal last evening, when a programme well up to the: Fuller Proprietary's usual standard of . excellence was presented. A special feature-.'of the evening was the amateur ballad singing competition, judged -by the audience. The winner was Mr. Kenneth Murray, of 3 Broomhedge Street, who sang "Teach me to Forget," and was awarded the gold medal. There was no less than 17 competitors, and; owing to the largeness of the number, each one was restricted to a single verse and chorus. Miss' C; Bowden, who did not enter for the competition, sang "Just a Bunch of Irish Sham-, rock" exceptionally an amateur, and was awarded a special gold ■ medal.
KUBELIK. •' Kubelik, the .famous violinist, will give his first concert, in Wellington at the Town Hall to-morrow evening,, and it may.be said that local music-lovers are indeed fortunate in being able to'hear an artist of Kubelik's rank.at the zenith of his fame. He is no longer the. boy prodigy _ who astounded the London critics some years ago. "He has past," one ■ writer says, "the dangerous period that usually' "follows close upon the successes of precocious youth, and is now sot safely upon the high road to a noble and exalted artistic . maturity." The artists selected to assist the great maestro during his Australasian, tour have all received great praise from tho Press in Melbourne and Sydney. Miss Erna Mueller, mezzo soprano, is said to possess a voice of beautiful quality, and extensive range,, and' she cornea ..with a high • reputation gained on London concert platforms. Miss Emily Dyason, piamste, also received great praise, for her brilliant solo work, whilst the*arduous,task' of accompanying Kubelik in the' many difficult compositions he plays is undertaken'by Herr Ludwig Schwab, said to be a remarkably fine musician of his class.. The box plans for the season arc at. the Dresden, w]jere the os. 3nd 3s. tickets arc also on sale. • OLYMPIA SKATING RINK. , Yesterday's attendances were well iip to tho average recorded-at 1 this rink. At tho evening session a 15-lap race was won by Mr. A. Morris. The. rink will be, open as usual to-day, tho evening session being under the auspices of. the _ Agonothetes Skating Club. To-morrow morning a children's matinee 'will be held,' when th'ore will'be a race for a pair of skates. The Olympia Band will bo in at- s tendance to-morrow afternoon and evening, and d'"polo' tournament will commence on Monday nisht. ■ ■ PONEKE. FOOTBALL CONCERT. Dr., A. K. Newman presided at the Poneko Football Club concert in the Sydney. Street schoolroom last night. ;Thero was a crowded attendance, which ■ included-the- Primo Minister, Sir Joseph -Ward,- Lady Ward, Miss Eileen'Ward, several members of the, AngloWelsh football team, arid Mk'T. M. Wilford, M.P. A first-class musical programme was: gone through, which was. much appreciatod, encores being frequent. Those-who sang were Miss Eileen ■ Ward,. Miss N; Twohill, and Messrs. T. W. Smith and W. Morgan, of the Anglo-Welsh football team;' D. Twohill, H. Hobman,' Leslie Hill, F. Twiss, Ern,est Parkes, J. Sweeney,, and D. H. Kenny, Mrs. Margaret Sutclilfe contributed 'two recitations, and Mr..T. M. Wilford told a legendary .' story of Tarewai, tho noted South Island fighting chief. An efficient orchestra was under the conductorsliip of Mr. H. M'Comish. ■ The proceeds of tlie concert are to be devoted to a fund for the purpose of providing tho Poneke Footjball Club witn a gymnasium.' :
