The matinee which Mad.imo Melba organised in aid of an East End Hospital—as a commemoratiou of the twentieth anniversary of her appearance in opera, and as an acknowledgment -of London's kindness—was a brilliant society function. Tho King and Queen wero present. As much a's a hundred guineas was paid for a singlo box. Madame Melba appeared tin Act-I .of "La Traviata." She mot with a wonderful ovation, and was pelted with roses. ■ The King went behind tho scenes and warmly congratulated her.
