UNION PARLIAMENT.
The Union Parliament met on Wednesday night in theY.M.C.A. Rooms, the Speaker (Mr. A. H. Casey) presiding. After several new members bad been introduced, and questions without notico answered, the Government introduced. a Dill for tho Repeal 6f tho 'Arbitration Act. Mr. Glanville Hicks (Minister for Lands and Labour) moved the second reading of tho Bill. Mr. A. C. Hretherton (Premier) seconded tho reading in a vigorous speech. Ho dealt at length with. tho defects of tho . present Afct, and advocated reforms, rather than tho sweeping completely away of the present system, or the substitution of a now and untried system. Mr. Wolfo (Leader of Opposition) did not think tho present Act should be repealed, but brought forward argument in favour of sonio of the Govornmont proposals, even though ho did i not seo oyo to eye with tho Government. ; Mr. J. E. Fitzgorald (Minister for Internal Affairs) defended tho Government on its proposal to adopt compulsory unionism. Mr. C. J. Nicklin (Minister for Customs), in a forceful speech, advocated the total repeal of the Act, and the right of labour to striko. Other speeches of a high ordor wero inado. Amendments on behalf of tbo Opposition will form tho basis of tho discussion for tho noxt meeting, which will bo held in the Y.M.C.A. Rooms oil July 7. The large audience included several ladies, and tho discussion pro. vided a vory entertaining and instructive evening. ;
