THE FINAL MEETING. 1 (Rec. Juno 25, 0.15 a.m.) London, Juno 24. The Archbishop of Sydney (Dr. Saumarez Smith) presided at a oombined devotional meeting of all sections of'tho Anglican 1 Congress in tho Albort Hall. Eight thousand people were, present at this, the final meeting of tile Congress. An impressive address was doliyered by the Bishop of Durham (Dr. Glyri Moulo). TRAFFIC IN BENEFICES. Advowson is a right of perpetual presentation 1 to an ecclesiastical benenco in a man and his heirs and assigns. An advowson may be either "appendant," i.e., attaohed to a manor, or "in ' gross," i.e., which can be transferred separately from one owner to another. The question of th'o sale of advowsons (wliioh only applies to the Church in England) raises the wholo.question of patronage. The dealing with .benefices is limited, and some of its worst abuses prevented, by law. Soveral attempts havo been made in recent years to restrict still further, by legislation, the. traffic, in bonofices, and ail. awakened conscience on the subject has produced a more exorcise of patronise. The'salo of advowsons has been satirised in the "Bab" ballad, commencing— A rich advowson, highly prized, For private sale was advertised; And many a parson made a hid; The Reverend' Simon Magus did.
