HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL. At the Lower Hutt Borough Council meeting last night there wero present the Mayor (Mr. T. A. Peterkin) and Councillors Baldwill, Judd, Ross, Hughes, Wildsmith, Hodgin?, O'Siillivan, Ward, and Russell. Correspondence was read from Rev. Mr. Heron, applying for further assistance in sending a blind patient to the Auckland Institute for instruction. It was resolved that pi'orided that satisfactory arrangements can be made the necessary amount be rated. Messrs, Bunny and Co. wrote enclosing a draft copy of tho Tramways Bill, and it was decided to arrange for a meoting of the combined Councils of Petone and Hutt in Hntt Chambers on Thursday next at 7.30 p.m.

Mrs. M. Smith, in reply to Council, stated that sho could not entertain the proposal to dedicate land in Orr's Lane for street-widening purposes unless sho was paid a reasonable compensation. Residents' of Downer Street wroto asking that tho drainage system be installed in their locality. The writors were informed that as soon as tho drainage system was arranged, their street would be attended to.

Tho New Zealand Express Company forwarded a cheque for damagos to tho bridge, lamps, etc. Messrs. Wylie Bros, wroto accepting tho offer of £650 for land fronting Race Course Road. '

Tho Municipal Association intimated that the Council is entitled to representation only at tho Municipal Conference. The Waiwetu Cricket Club applied for a second cricket pitch on the Recreation Ground. No. 1 Committee reported that the club be allowed tho extra pitch. A letter was received from the Petone Borough Council with reference to' the proposed extension of their gas system, and asking tho Hutt Borough, Council to meet, the Petone Council to 'discuss the altered arrangements.

With regard to driving stock through tho borough the Council's solicitors advised that tho only way to control the traffic was to pass a special-by-law to deal 'with tho: matter. < '■

The stato of. tho accident insurance fund was roported to be as follows:—1901-2—Pre-miums. paid, £10; claims, nil. 1902-3 —Premiums, £7 10s.; claim, nil;' 1903-s—Pre-miums, £53 3s. 4d.; claims, nil. 1905-6— Premium, £70 35.; claims; nil. 1906-7— Premium, £92.145. &!.; claim. £14. • 1907-3 —Premium, £120 10s. 2d.: claim, £2 ss. 1908-9—Premium, £13 6's. Councillor Ross moved that it be, a remit to the_ Municipal Association that the local' bodies institute an accident insurance fund;. Accounts to the amount of £422 125.; 2d.; wero passed for payment. ENGINEER'S REPORT. i Tile engineer roported as follows I The main road kerb and channci is completed as far as Mr. Gordon's carriage entrance, and the centre kerbing as far as the boundary line of Mr. Gordon's property.. Waterworks —Two- hundred and ton house connections hare been mado with the mains up to date. The reticulation of the Wainui P„oad as far as Mr. Alleu's is practically completed. Moiling Bridgei.—Tho concreting to the anchorages on tho western sido of the river is com-; pleted, also the excavation and concroting for the piers. Tho excavation on the eastern side is in hand. 'In accordance with instructions, the recreation ground ' lias bean fenced. Certain buildings in the course of erection of old materials have been condemned, and the owner compelled to pull them down. COMMITTEE REPORTS. The No. l i Committee made the following recommendations: —, That the Council apply for an overdraft to the extent of £10,000, and that the Town Clork ho authorised to undertake that fclio overdraft is kept within the limit prescribed by Section 154 of the..Munieipal,Corporatioiis Act, 1900. Library Hours.—That in future the timo allowed for lunch bo from 1 p.m.-to 2.30 p.m. instead of from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. as at present, and that the library be open till 9.30 p.m. on Saturdays. That a 'notice be placed in tho library inviting donations of books. That rules as set out' be adopted for the regulation of the library. '• • Tho No. 2 Committoo reported as follows: —Gas Extension, Pretoria Street.— Recommending that consideration of this matter be adjourned for a fortnight, and that in the meantime Mr. Watkins be in-, .formed that beforo extending'the main for the distanco suggestod, it will'be necessary for tho Council to have a greater consumption promised than at present indicated. Gas to To Momi Estate. —That the engineer has been instructed to report to nest meeting of the committee furnishing an estimate, of the cost.

PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL. ' Tho fortnightly meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Bwan) presiding, and tho following also being present■ Councillors Young, Lodder, Southgato, Colquhoun, Ca3tle, Cole, Short, and Dr. Harding. Mr. T, M. Wilford wrote ro procuring a site for a coal depot in view of the wharf being completed. The letter was received. Tho Mayor moved, and it was carried, that tho Engineer report on streets requiring new lamps, six new ones to be added.

His Worship moved that the Council meet, tho Hutt Council in, conference' at'tho Hutt to consider the Tramways Bill, and that certain clauses bo added, tho meeting to bo held on Thursday evening noxt, at 8 o'clock. Considerable discussion took place on tho powers of tho Bill. Two tenders for signboards > for streetnaming wero received, ono from Mr. Itennie at 2s. sd. each (accepted), and one from Mr. J. Battersly at 2s. 6d.' Tho Wellington Guide Company wrote offering £25 for tho right to advertise oh tho face of tho hill by the Korokoro Ivoad. Mr. H. Thompson, Wellington, wrote with regard to unfenced land. purchased from him by the Petono Borough Council, and asked that samo be fenced. Tho Mayor moved, and it was carried, that the Engineer report upon tho matter to next Council meeting. A deputation, composed of Messrs. Wakefield, Scroggs, Smith, Glading,' and Jones, waited on tho Council with regard to tho sanitary arrangements at the Korokoro school. Mr. Wakefield pointed out the seriousness of tho matter. - The Mayor suggested that the, committee apply to the Land- Board for part of the thirds to be spent for sanitary purposes.
