ENTERTAINMENTS.
RICKARDS'S VAUDEVILLE CO. A crowded house again greeted the Rickards's Vaudoville Company at tho Opera House on Saturday night. The programme presented was of a most varied character, and every "turn" delighted the audience. The Klos Sisters, daiiitly attired; again swung in graceful attitudes from various trapezes, bc-sides performing some very clever feats of strength. They had to rospond to an undeniable encore. Another ,0 '- T successful item was tho horizontal-bar work by tho Brothers Artois. They ; interspersed their work with very appropriate oomicalities, hearty applause being • acoorded t lein. The Miles-Stayordalo quintet pleased lie audience wit.i their music on stringlnstruuients, a featuro of the entertainment' being their imitations of the human voice. '• iUiss Lottie Kay gave evidence of a pleasing soprano voice, which she used to good effect m tho rendering of popular songs, her best effort perhaps was "Swallows." A coon song , by Miss Alma Gray met with hearty arv proval, and for an encore sho gavo an exhibition of clog-dancing. A form of entertainment that generally appeals to : lovers of vaudeville is tho singing to the accompaniment of illustrated pictures, Mr. Leonard Reason was very successful ill this respcct. V two Collier Sisters were encored for their singing and dancing, as was Mr. George Dean, whose catchy songs met with hearty applause. A number of" bioscope pictures assisted to make up an excellent programme. Tho company ivill appear again this evening.
ORGAN RECITAL. •To-morrow evening Mr. Maughan Barnett will give his weekly organ recital at the Town Hall. The programme includes "Concerto No. 2 M (Handel), "Andantino" (Lomare), Overture' "Caliph of Bagdad" (Boieldieu), and other delightful selections. KUBELIK. Tim box plans will bo opened at the Dresden this morning for the guinea and half— o7 in oo spa^s or the Kubelik season, June. •!i ?jf „ ,®"", further opportunities will b6 afforded for hearing the great violinist in Wellington, -as arrangcmoiits havo been concluded for a speedy return to Australia to give return concerts in Melbourne and Sydney, where the first seasons were extraordinarily successful. The North Island tour is a very brief one. It will be inaugurated this evening at - Auckland. On Thursday ovening a concert will bo given at Wancanui; and on Friday at Palraerston. At the Palmerston concert His Excellency the Governor and Lady Plunket. will bo present. The artists assisting the great maestro dur- -~ nig the New Zealand tour are Miss Erna Mueller (mezzo soprano), Miss Emily Dyason (solo pianist), and Herr Ludwig 'Schwab (accompanist).
1 ; ; OLYMPIA SKATING RINK. .Skating was well patronised at the Olym. pia on Saturday morning, afternoon"',and evening. The rink was one busy whirl of.' ceaseless,' gliding wheels and their human freight, some doing fancy and graceful skating, othors not ■ able to skate upright. •During the evening the prizes'won 'at'the'- ' last carnical were presented to the successful * competitors as follows: —Best fancy dress, lady, Miss Wehdall; best fancy dress,' gentlemen, Mr. H. Davies; most .graceful lady skater, Mrs. M'Ewen; most graceful gentleman skator, Mr. Brill; most graceful couple. Miss Oldham and Mr. Martin; most original character, Miss F. Garbes; most comical ; character, Mr. Butt'; best girl under sixteen, Miss Doris Hill; best boy under sixteen, Master Rowlands; musical chairs, Mr.' B. Robin; hoop race, Mr. P. Killean; fan and . balloon race, Master G. Piercy. The milo ' championship decided last evening was won by H. Davis, with A. H. Ragg second, and D. Morris third. Davis anticipated tlio pistol, and, getting well away, was never caught, winning in the very slow tinio of 4 minutes 5 seconds. Paterson was unlucky in getting blocked, and also falling, spoiling what must otherwise have been a good chance.. After the race, Davis was presented ■ with the championship gold medal, Mr A. H. Ragg being tho recipient of a silver medal for second place. Mr. A. Paterson. was also presented with a gold medal for a milo race, which he won from scratch last Monday evening. The rink will be open as usual, and a grand fancy dress and poster cafnival will bo held shortly. .. !
THEATRE EOYAL. Fuller's is an institution, deeply rooted in the public favour, to which patrons look confidence and anticipation fdr enjoyable entertainment. There was a big audieneo at- the Theatre- Royal on Saturday evening, when a programme ■ excellent in variety ana merit was submitted. The biograph film "Lazy Jim's Luck" was a popular curtainraiser. Miss Beatrice Butler, the talented New South Wales soprano, in her . song "Wishing Cap," was very successful.' Tho musical eccentriques, Armon Brothers, wore a decided feature. Sensationalism is Bryant's watchword, and. he fills tho bill with his knife and axe swinging. The Swifts (Mr. Wilton and tho Misses Amy and Dorothy) made a great hit in-their original act. •'•'Tho Awful Boy." The ever-popular Miss Blanch/ Corelli, for her rendering of "April Morn" and "Lullaby,"-wan heartily applauded. Tho other members, of the company were in excellent form, and did full justice to their allotted tasks. Last, but by no means least, was the biograph representation of the classic * English race, the "Grand National," as run at Aintree on Starch 27 last. The work of lio less than fourteen cameras was involve* in tho production of this film. ,
