SAN JOSE SCALE.
THE NELSON OUTBREAK. ' ALARMING STATEMENTS., The Nelson "Mail" states that San JostJ scale has existed in Nelson orchards for six years past, and calls upon the Department of Agriculture to explain' how it is that the pest has been so long neglected.: The'"Mail" further states that the scale had long ago been brought under the notice of a high official of tho Department, who actually' took two pieces of infected wood away with him A statement by tho : "Mail", that the lirno-salt-sulphur remedy cannot be used on peach trees because it causes the buds to drop off seems to indicate that ,tho orchardists of Stoke, where the trouble exists, do not consider the scalo sufficiently serious to warrant the destruction of/their trees. We believe the Department will 'not view tho matter io lightly, but/will fully realise that tho whole industry is relying on it to wipo out tins pest regardless of any expense that it is likely to involve. If, however,. the- pest has been known to Stoko orchardists for any considerable 'period; it may bo regarded as .certain that tho infection is very widespread - All -fruit-growers should keep watch on their trees.
