LACROSSE.

The gaino of lacrosse is making progress in Wellington. With the help of pamphlets, giving a short outline of tho rules distributed amongst the spectators, the game "is being understood, and its fino'points appreciated. Several of the onlookers last Saturday cams specially to see tho game, and thoy were not disappointed, as finer play has not been seen this season ,at all events. Neither club had a full team.on tho field, but there were enough players to show , how the game should be played. The fine passing of such experts as Montgomery, Robinson, and Estcourt was an object lesson. Of course,'lacrosse cannot bo learnt in ono season, and tho improvement shown by tho now players is very encouraging. . The Wellington Lacrosse. Association liavo

invited a team from tho American fleet to como and play a , match. If it can be arranged, their visit will do much to make tho gamo : . popular. here,, and will ■ draw. a good number of spectators. Whether they como or not, a team will go from hero to make up a strong combination with the -Auckland players, and, should give the Americans all they know to win. ■ At least ono of tho' ladies' colleges hero aro seriously considering the advisability of their pupils taking up lacrosse. If they do, others will follow. It is a much safer game te play than hockey, and tho players are in less danger of getting a serious "injury. In a recent number of the "Ladies' Pictorial," thero is ' a pictnre of two ladies' collego teams playing a match at Lord's, and, judging from the attendance, tho interest was evidently considerable. , It is an ideal game for athletes,' giving them all the running they want. It is also a purely unselfish game, and requires combination rather than individual play. Tho more a team play to each other, the moro successful th-ey will be, and' as a well-known authority said on ono occasion in Melbourne, "It is essentially a game for thoroughbreds."
