NOTES AND "COMMENTS. . „ '• |"Bx Glencoe.l Acceptances for tho Napier Park Racing Club's .Winter-Meeting close this evening.' King Post was brought home to Trontham last night','after an unsuccessful trip to Hastings. The weight and the] heavy going proved too much for tne'SeatoniDelaval gelding. • . Loch Fyne's trainer overlooked the. nomina■Vtions for. tho Napier Park meeting, but as J the Great Northern Steeplechase winner is ■ engaged at the GisHorne meoting ho was shipped north, yesterday; At the conclusion of tie latter fixture 1 he' will b'a brought on to Trentham. . Winning jockeys at the Hawke's Bay meet- . ing were:—F...'D. Jones, two; H. Cairns, F. Grcylands,.F.'Liin3, D. Watt, M. Dceblo, J. Lyford,' W. .Whittaker, Pi Davis, A. Oliver, and J. AjfCo'mbe, one'each. Repulse is to': he treated to /a spell. Ho was badly knocked about when he fell in tho Turampe Hurdles, on Thursday, and is consequently feeling the effects of it. The Robinson . Crusoe gelding looked wonderfully woll ait Hastings, and on each day he raced splendidly and showed better, staying power than he has previously "done.- Prospector, though ■a good.juqiper, is inclined.to flounder soine- \ what,' and he evidently put. Repulse out' of his stride on Thursday, for tho latter scarcely rose at all.!, at the 'hurdle, and it was ' nothing short of miraculous .that W., Higgins escaped very serious injury. . Shrapnel was taken back to Auckland yesterday. ... The son. of Workman was only started on'-the : first day ! of the Hawko's Bay meeting, when he filled third position behind Lull.' Just at present, lie is not fully; wound - iip, but he should be a .tough proposition in ■'a month's time. Sandi (San Fran —Miniature) has broken down badly, and had to ba thrown out of ; work. ; , f. ' , . One of tho nicest looking jumpers seen at * the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's meeting was the bay gelding Waihekau, by Brookby, a i member' of W.' H. Mobberloy's team. Just at present Waihekau is very much on the big side,_ but when he has fined down I will • ' b9 surprised if he does hot prove useful.. i Buoyant showed poor form on both days et Hastings. The one-time, crack jockey, J. Gallagher, who has recently been training a few horses it Ellerslie, is retiring from the Turf, and' going into another line of business in Auckland.'. , ' .. The black gelding Genuine (Bona Fide — Lonely) is running paddock-at Taon'ui, j ' and, will not be raced again : uutil the summer - , months. " ] At the-conclusion of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's meeting, J. Lowe took his team on to Napier Park for next Wednesday's racing. Iranui' was the only member of .the i team that raced _at Hastings. She failed to ( gain o place on either day. < The bookmakers present at the Hawke's i Bay; meeting say that _'whon J. M'Combo j ■ rides The Seer the combination is invincible, ] and that on' any future;: occasion that tho ' Turquoise gelding is ridden" by the, Riccarton ' horseman) 'backers will have to invest their | . money on tho totalisato'r. ~ Tho majority of the gentlemen riders who took part in the Bracelet events at Hastings • gave, poor, displays in tho saddle. One of , them informed a friend after.the first day!s race that the last fourteen timos he has •- started he has Jieen unable to get a clear run on the rails. ! In conversation with Sol's trainer at Hast- 1 ings during the week, he informed me that ' . Sol pulled up perfectly sound after tho Winter i Steeplechase at Ellerslie; • but the owner of i the horse was not disposed to run any risk of < the gallant' little 'chaser breaking down, and consequently ordered him to be spelled for, I the remainder of the season., • I During tho absence of Jno. O'Connoll in < Australia, Nadador will he ridden by A. i M'Connon in : all her engagements., Tho maro j is improving every week, and should give' a ■ good account of herself at Napior Park next. i week. , ' , The total amount of prize-money (exclusive ' of the Bracelets and Necklace) given away at ' the winter meeting of the Hawio's Bay Joe- 1 ' key CJub amounted to £1655. RANGITIKEI RACING GLUB. (BY TEIECEAPII—SPECIAL COItEESPONDENTS.) Marton, June 19. ; Tho annual meeting of tho Raiigitikei Racing Club at Bulls last evoning was largely attended. Mr. J. G. Wilson presided.. •Tho election of officors resulted: President, Mr. Donald Fraser; vice-presidents, Messrs. J. A. Bailey, D. Coughhn, and J. G. Wilson; committee, Messrs. F. O. Bailor, K. ,W. Dalryniple, W. A. Keillor, Thomas .King, A. A. M'Donell, Lynn M'Kelvie, G. W. M'Kerizie, J. H. Perrett, JV. J. Phillips, and John Whiskor. Mr. J. M'Jlelvie was roelccted judgo. The chairman referred to the unpleasant and uncalled-for hooting at the meeting last year. Ho sympathised with the judge, who stood it woll. • This could not bo avoided, but it was unfortunate that people should oxpres3 thomsolves in such'a manner because they happened to lose a few shillings. Mr. Mansell was re-elected treasurer, i The proposed alteration of dates - for tho spring meeting led to a lengthy discussion. The chairman stated the committee had suggested August 26 and 27 for the next'race meoting. These dates were sent to the Wanganui ; Metropolitan Club for approval, but -were refused. The reason assigned for this .was that the Marton Jockey Club had sent in an objection. The only dates now available wore September 16 and 17. Mr. Perrett then moved that the dates March 17 and 18 be substituted for tho present spring meoting- held on September 16 and 17. His principal reason for moving this motion wa3 the difficulty of-getting suitable dates. This difficulty was not so acute four or fiyo years ago, but since that time 9ther clubs'had closed upon, them, and now they had throe local clubs racing in- the same month, namoly, Marton, Horowhenua, and Wanganui, and there was also a meeting at Hawke's Bay. He went on to refer to the dearth of steeplechasers. This year there ,were .very fGW horses, in training for these events. It was a moot point whether, if they had steeplechases, thoy would get many horses nominated. .Of course he would, be sorry to have these events, done away with, -but it was necessary to study the best , interests of tho club. He would not have moved this motion if tho metropolitan body had approved of the August dates. ' Mr. J. Bull's amendment that tho meeting bo held as usual was carried, most of ,the speakers objecting to doing away with the steeplechase, events.' «
