SAN JOSE SCALE.
ALAHMING NEWS. ■ SERIOUS OUTBREAK IN NELSON.. Tho dreaded San Jose scalo pest of fruit trees has been discovered in several orchards in Nelson. The discovery was made recently by Mr. Blackmbre, Government pomolcgist, and his assistants, and was reported to the biologist, who has had prompt measures' taken to stamp out the intruder. San Jose scale lias an exceedingly bad name in America and Australia, and if it gets a strong footing in N(Sw Zealand it will cause great trouble to our orchardists. Mr. Kirk (biologist) states that he has had several of tho worst infected trees destroyed, and others are being sprayed at intervals with tho lime-salt-sulphur' mixture.' The outbreak will/ be regarded by all fruit growers as very disquieting news', but tho staff of officials who 'have successfully stamped out threo attacks of the equally, dreaded fruit-fly may be relied on to do good work against this new enemy. Itjwill, however, probably take more than one season to obtain a complete assurance that tho San Jose scale visit is at an end. Tho Australian remedies are the lime-salt-sulphur mixture and red oil.
