» — •' POLITICAL ADDRET3. Mr. Shortt,. of Petone, p-vo his first political address in the Odt'.ieilows' Hall last night. The hall was crowded, Mr. J. W. M'Ewan, Mayor, of Tvtone, occupied the chair, and briefly, spoke'on behalf of the candidate.

Mr. Shortt, on rains, was well received, and explained many cf his views on political matters. The ch:i iiilato denounced tho methods of the Government in acquiring land, referring to the Nai' Nai estate, which i..< said one could not st-aiid on without a pair of stilt's. A number of questions were put to the candidate, and satisfactorily answered. The 'candidate stated that lie did not care a fig whether tho Government took him up or not. What ho wanted'was the support of the people, and, if elected, be would certainly see that tho people's interests were attended'to. 1 A voto of thanks . and confidence was moved, seconded, and carried, as also was a vote of thanks to tho chairman. Mr. Devercaux, who has been resident in tho Hutt for the last forty-nine years, has left for the Waikato district, where ho will' tako charge of a farm which ho purchased recently. Mr. Devereaux still retains his interests" in property in the borough. Tho Hutt Valley Social and Athletic Club has had several good meetings since the opening ceremony, and everything, points to a, successful season. Monday and Thursday' evenings will bo devoted to "gym." Mr. W. J. Eddie has been appointed custodian of costumes. A little excitement was caused in' Jackson Street, Petone, yesterday afternoon, through ono of tho bullocks getting away from tho Gear Company's yards, and charging down tho streot, clearing'all before him. Olio of the Gear drovers tried to stop tho animal on foot, but it made for him, and ho got over tho fence. Three ladies got over a fenco out of tho animal's way, about as fast as an athlote could manage it.
