SAMOS.
A MASSACRE OP TUSKS. CAUGHT WITHOUT AMMUNITION. TERRIBLE VENGEANCE. BT TELEGRAPH —1-EEfIS ASSOCIATION —COPTBIUHI. (Uec. Juno 15, 10.43 p.m.), Constantinople, Jnno 15. It has transpired that, in connection with the expedition recently sent by the Sultan to the Island of Santos, twenty Turkish troops landed at Vnthy, the capital of the island, without ammunition. Becoming separated from their comrades, they wore massacred, and frightfully mutilated by the Samiotes (inhabitants of Samos). RECENT DISTURBANCES. 1 On 'the ground that disturbances in Samos needed quelling, the Sultan sent Turkish troops to the island, in violation of tho international treaty under which tho autonomy of Samos is guaranteed by France, Britain,, and Russia. It was cabled that the Turks killed eighty women and children on the first day. A semi-official report received in Athens stated that tho Turkish soldiers repeatedly fired at the consulates. Those defending the Governor's palace fired on tho passers-by indiscriminately.. . On the other band, Turkey, when warned by the Powers that the autonomy of Samos must be maintained, promised to withdraw tho troops when order is restored. The disturbances in the island arose, it would seem, after the Governor bad refused to summon the Assembly. Though a self-governing principality, Samos is lmder the suzerainty of Turkey, and is administered by a_ prince of the Sultan's nomination, assisted by four elective Senators. The Sultan asks for tlie withdrawal of the Greek Consul.
