Frederick Arthur Stanley, sixteenth Earl of Derby, had filled a number of appointments in Conservative Ministries. A recent biographer remarksTho Stanleys liave filled many notable parts in English history from the 14th century onward, beginning with that Sir John Stanley who was Lord of live Isle of Man and Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland. Having their origin at Stanley, in Derbyshire, tho family settled in • Lancashire, and tho present Earl is IGth of this honourable line. Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley was born .18-11, educated at Eton, ajid went into Parliament for Preston in ISGS, afterwards sitting for tho Blackpool Division. JTe was successively Lord of the Admiralty, Financial Secretary at . the War Office, Financial Secretary to tho Treasury, Secretary for War, Secretary for the Colonies, and President of the Board of Trade.' Afterwards he was Governor-General of Canada. Ho served in tho Grenadior, Guards, and has been Lord Mayor of Liverpool. He is an incomparable host, and linowsloy Hall has frequently housed the King himself. Ho married tljo eldest daughter of the fourth Earl of Clarendon, and his hoir is-Lord Stanley, born in 1565." Tho late Earl owned about 69,000 acro3, chiefly in Lancashire.
