CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES. On account of the Athletic Park 1 being occupied by the Northern Union game on Saturday afternoon, all tho senior hockey fixtures wero played at Day's Bay, and tho junior matches were decided at Miramar. Tho Day's Bay grounds \vcro all somewhat sodden and slippery, and this interfered considerably with tho players. Tho following iro tho results: — UNITED (2) v. WELLINGTON (1). Tho match Jiptween United and Wellington, which was decided on No. 2 ground, was fast and interesting. In the first hair Wellington wero l'ar superior to their opponents, and had they. been steadier in the circle they would have been rewarded with at least two goals. Tho United accosted what chances camo to them, which wero few, .and managed to put on two goals, shot by Elliott and Matthews, in a short spaco of timo. From this stage, tho Wellington team practically held their own. Tho second half was very evenly contested. As a' result of good following up, Ul'rich (Wellington), was onablcd to pierce tho defence, but tho score was only negotiated after a determined struggle at the post. Tho scores wero not altered, and United thus won by two to one. Tho United front lino was far from steady, and will need to show a great improvement if they are to heat Karon. Tho United defence was good, and tho halves did excellent work, but the forwards failed to _take'advantage of this. Pearson, the United goalkoeper, stopped several warm shots, and King, at centre, played a splendid gamo. For Wellington Brewer played a magnificent game, and the same can bo said of Reid, the centro-half. The latter player showed great judgment in following up and feeding tho forwards. Mr. Walton was tho referee.
KARORI (0) V. VICTORIA COLLECE (4). Tho, match between. Karori and Victoria Collego was played 011 No. 1' ground, and resulted in a will for tho former representatives by 6 to 4. In tho first spell tho game was very oven, except that the Collegians had very hard Inck in hitting tho post. Later on in the game Karon were unfortunato enough to hit tho cross-bar. Tho first spell ended three all. Tho victors were hard pressed in tho first twenty minutes of the second half, and at that stage Victoria Collego led by 4to 3. In the last quarter of an liour, however, Karori rattled on three goals, coming suddenly to light with fresh energy. After Karori equalised tho scores, tho other jW'o goals were hit in quick succession, and tho gamo ended in tho Collegian's twentyfivo. The Karori forwards played well, but the hacks made a rather poor exhibition, owing principally to tho heavy going. Tho scorers for the victors were Murphy, Putnam (3), Fulton, and Davics, and licere and Monaghan did tho scoring for tho losers. Early in tho gamo, A. Cathie (Karori), wa3 knocked accidentally on tho left, shoulder by a Karori player,, but lie was able to resmno flaying. Rev. A. Dowdney carried the whistle.VIVIAN (3) v.' WESLEY (2). No. 4 ground was tho scene of tho interesting contest between Vivian and AVesley. Tho Wosleyans had tho first advantage, and would havo registered a score from tho bully off, ' but for tho oxcellcnt defence of tho Vivians, which thoir opponents found too solid for them all througn tho game, Pjay was desultory for a few minutes, but Vivian livened up, and Dunn shot tho first goal, and some time'afterwards Donovan (Vivian) shot a second goal, and -Collins a third. Tjioro wero quito a number of keen tussles at tho Vivian posts, but tho defence was too combined, and the ball was usually sent to neutral territory. • From a penalty bully in. tho Vivian twenty-fivo, Wesley pressed hard, but they could not penotrato tho defence. Hewever, one of tho defenders-hit tho ball'lightly forward, and this gave tho Wesloyans an opportunity, and Smith knocked r.1'.0 ball over tho Wads -of- the. Vivian tcarir,; thus -making Wesleyans' first score. Another penalty bully resulted similarly, Keys goring. There was no further score, and ivian won by 3to 2. Neither side exhibited'much combination, and thoro was far too much long hitting, although it was good and c.ean. Tho' Wesleyans played their usually, hard gamo, and they were more often than not on the attack. Mr. Geo. Nathan refereed.
Y.M.C.A. (4) v. THORNDOM (2). Tho Y.M.C.A.-Thorndon match was played on 'No. 3 ground, and was well contested. In tho first half, A Parton scored threo goals and one in tho second. L. Hunt and T. Footo scored for tho losers. Mr. K. C. Morpeth was the referee. JUNIOR. '! In the game, St. Patrick's Old Boys'v,, Wesley, Old Boys made tho game hot for their opponents, and gained tho honours of the play. Wesley tried hard in tho second spell to add to their score, and hut for their fondness for hugging the ball individually would probably have made a better showing. "Scooping" and offsido play was, unfortunately, noticqablo among Old Boy players. The game ended: —Old Boys, 12; Wesley, 1. The following made the scores: —St. Patricks: Francis 3,. Ryan 5, Quinn % Chapman 1. Gntonby I.' Wesley: Brown 1. Payne, a St. Patrick's player, was disabled during the gamo, as also was Cundy, of the Wosloy. team. Mr. R. L. Jones was refereo. THIRD CLASS. The weather was perfect for hockey. KIWI v. WELLINGTON. In this match, which took placo on Vivian ground,-Kiwi, playing against, tho wind, immediately commenced a brisk attack.on the
Wellington goal. Shot after shot was tried, but dospcrately repulsed by tho defending team, tno goalkeeper being . conspicuous. Soon play opened out, alid tho Wellington forwards, led by Miss Fisher, made some gqod runs, but Miss Gea.l on tho right, and Miss Fitzgerald in tho centre of the Kiwi half lino generally accounted for these. Towards the end of tho first spell a strong . attack was inado by tho Wellington for- ■ wards on tho right, carrying tho ball from their own twenty-five down to tho Kiwi's twenty-five, but tho attack was _ spoilt by ; Miss Fisher, taking tho ball off-side and a good chsnco to score was lost. The first spell ended with no score. In tho second spell Kiwi had the advantage of tho wind, and using their wing well soon had Wellington in difficulties. Miss Holmes got tho first goal from a pass from tho right, and into in tho. spell got her second goal in a tight corner with a beautifully quick and neat stroke. Tho two ccntro forwards,' Miss Fisher (Wellington) and Miss Glasgow (Kiwi) both worked hard, and Miss Lawry, on tho Kiwi loft wing, mado many brilliant runs, ablv assisted by lior .neighbour.
