THE TURF
REMINDER. Owners and trainers are reminded that nominations for ail events (except Trial Plate) at tho Wellington Racing Club's winter mooting, closo with tho secretary, Mr. A'. E. Wliyte, on Monday oveniiig at i) p.m. NOTES AND COMMENTS. [By Gi.isncof,.] Grand Prix do Paris will be run to-morrow. Tho Hawko's Bay Jockey Club's wjnter meeting commences on Wednesday next. Tho St. Clements gelding Climax is said to I)e shaping encouragingly over tho small sticks at Hawera. Tho Horowhenua Hack Racing Club has fixed the date of its annual meeting for September 9 and 10. Kaipotipcti, who won_ the Grandstand Steopiechaso at AVanganui last month, has been oh the sick list sinco his return to Hastings. His condition is improving, but ho will not bo fit enough to start at tho Hawke's Bay meeting next week. Tho Queensland Turf Club deduct £175 from fclio takings of each day's racing for tho caro of tho racecourso. This amount' is always placed on .tho debit sido of tho bal-ance-sheet before the profits of tho different meetings aro worked out. The bay gelding King's Lynn has joined C. L. Lagor's team at Bastings. Tho son of Seaton Delaval _ ivas unfortunate enough to fill second position in both the Pahiatua and Woodvilla Cups this season. While at tho Auckland winter meeting, Mr. A, F. Douglas purchased the steeplechaser Bullworth, and the chestnut gelding arrived in Hastings during tho week. Bullworth acted as runner-up to Sol in the Takapuna Stoeplechase, and lie showed a lot of pace in the Maiden Steeplechase at Ellerslie, being in tho lead when ho fell. Ho is not engaged at the Hawko's Bay or Napier Park meetings, but has been entered for the steeplechase on each day at Gisborne. Tho Stopniak colt Lsvmsdorff is still disabled, and will not bo a competitor at tho Hastings meeting. » . Pierre has arrived at' Hastings Co fulfill his ongagoraont in the Hawko's Bay Steoplechase. The Muskapcer t gelding is also entered at Napier Park. As Kiatere's nomination for tho Victorian Grand National was too late, it is probablo l iat ho will be entered for tho big event at Riccarton in August. He has competed in the-last tlireo contests for tho C.J.C. Grand National, his boat effort being when he ran third last year. His form at the recent Ellorslio meeting was not very encouraging, but as his preparation was 'interrupted it is possible that another month will work some improvement in his condition.. Lctheriri aud Valima wont through from Masterton :to Hastings on Wednesday. Letherin is 'engaged m tho Hack Hurdles and Ladies' Bracelet. Valima is ono of the steeplechase candidates. Sho will bo ridden by tnat capable horseman, Clarence O'Neill. The Now Zealand horses engaged in the. Victorian jumping events seem to bo fairly well treated by tho handicapper. Maui, list., if fit and well, should givo a good account of himself, but Waipu, lOsfc.' 31b., is probably bettor suited over a long journey, and considering- his . recent win in tlio Great Northern Hurdles ho . has received lenient treatment. ' Regret, the top-weight, is a very fast horse, but he.will'be pitted against, a horse, that onco boat Margucrito on tho Hat, if Maui starts. Whether tho lattor can see out a three-milo journey is another matter. ' Aloe. Hall took Lull through to Hastings during tho week. Our Hastings correspondent' says tho Handsome Jack gelding is not, looking too bright, but ho is performing his training tasks satisfactorily. *, : Tho latest recruit to the ranks of tho hurdlers is ,the imported horso Gazelov. In his initial efforts over tho sticks ho shoved fjuito an aptitudo for tho gamo. , His pertormances on the flat recently have been very .disappointing, and ill his races at Otaki last weok he. looked to bo. tired of tho track. Jumping hurdles might serve .to . instil a little courage into .him. . Post Haste and Pushful wero associated in a spin over the big country at Hastings oil Thursday morning. Post Haste lost his rider after ' traversing two rounds, • but up till that stago ho fenced proficiently. Pushful finished three rounds safely, but tired perceptibly over the last portion of tho jouruev. 1 Tho following horses engaged l ,at tho Hawko's Bay Jockey Club's mooting are already on tho scene and working on the Hastings track each ] morning Ahei, Ancvle, Asteroid, Ballyneoty, Black Reynard, California, Carron, Chatterer, Chrysoprase, Comedian, Commander, Dan Leno, Ell King, Faro, Floria, Formidable, Gold Dust, Goldfield, Kaipetipeti, Lamsdorff, Letherin, Lull, Maiora, Maku, Merry Tiger ; Miss Advance, Mistime, Monarque, Millennial, My Darling, Mystification, Nadador, Nogi, Northern Star, North Polo,- Olympus, Pierre, Polyanthus/ Post Haste, Prospector, Prize Bloom, Pushfulpßawhiti, lleputo, Robin Link, Ruabon, San Jose, The Seer, Top Roso, Uenuku, Vaiima, Waipuuehit, Whakawehi, White Lie.,
_ Mr. Theodore A. Cook, in his work entitled "Eclipse and O'Kelly," gives the following anecdote concerning the first appearance of Eclipse on the racing track Eclipse was trained at Mickleham, and ran his first race, which was at Epsom, on May 3, 1769, when ho was (ivo years old. Ho was tried ■with a horse, of o'Kelly's, and O'Kelly and his party would havo had the game all to thomselves but for an old woman, who, on being asked by the laggard touts if she had seen anything like a race, replied that she had seen a horse with a white leg running away at a monstrous rate, and'another horeo a long way behind was trying to catch him; but slio was sure he never would catch the white-legged ono if ho ran to the world's end. This gavo tho show away. The race he won was for horses' that had never won £30. Long odds were laid on Eclipse, and O'Kelly won most of his money by backing Eclipse to distance the -field.
