LOWER HUTT PARK.

THE HUTT GOLF CLUB'S POSITION. The Hutt Park Committee held a meeting on Thursday evening, there' being present Messrs. Itussell (in tho chair), Hodgins, M'Ewan, ; Soufchgate, and Colquhoun. A conference was held v/ith the Hutt Golf Club, represented by Dr. Purdy, JSlessrs. 11. C. Kirk, Callender,' and Cameron. Mr. Russell stated that the committee was inclined to Mr; Skerrott's, opinion that it was not competent for it to lease to the club. All that could be offerod was a year to year tenancy. ",He was of opinion that tho committee could charge' rents for playing purposes. Mr. M'Ewan thought tho committee could scarcely give the Golf Club any say in the management. It appeared that there was but little use in proceeding further with tho negotiations. - Ui - • Mr., Kirk thought the committee had power under , the Public Works Act to rogulato sports carried in on the ground. Under tho Act of 1885, ho' believed the. committee had power to treat with the club with regard to playing right's; Tho Legislature, as the wording of the Act would appear to show, anticipated that, sports would be carriod on ■by individual clubs,.which would, of course, requiro to orect pavilions and other necessary. structures:. The- club's point of view was that of security of tenure, and so far as he could see, thero was npthing to prevent an extension of, their rights upon'the lines suggested for a term of years. ■ Committee. arrived at the conclusion that it could riot'depart'from its offer of a year to year, tenancy.. Tlioy held that tho admission'of the invalidity of the lease must precede any fresh arrangement. It was resolved to'inform the'club that the committee could not agree to Mr. Kirk's proposal, also that the club be given fourteen days' notice in which to,admit the invalidity of the lease and to agree to'the terms submitted by tho committee.' ■ - ■
