HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
— ® The annual tea and concert of St. Angus-' tine's Church was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Potone, last night. A plentiful supply of good things was provided, first for young :people at a tea, and afterwards for' the adults. The Rev. Mr. Russel presided. Tableaux, representing the three well-known hymns, " Rock. of . Ages," .'.'Lead, Kindly. Light," and "Ahide with Me," were arranged by Mr. Baxter. The following ladies and gentlemen contributed to the programme:— Mrs. Guthrie, two whistling solos; Miss Kibblewhife, song; Messrs Mason, Grey, and Bowman, songs; Mrs. Grey, House, and Evans, recitations. The'entertainment concluded with the farce, "How to Catch the Burglar." A'large crowd of people assembled in the Victoria Hall, Petone, last evening, the occasion being the monthly meeting of the NoLicense League. Rev. B. Metson presided. Mr. A. J. Daniels was elected as assistant secretary. The following programme was then rendered:—Pianoforto solo, Miss Battersby; song, Mr. 'Chamberlain; rccitation, Miss Sussex ; violin solo, . Mr.- Burd; 'song; Mr. Evans; song, Mrs. Greenwood; soiig, Mr. Urving; and recital, Miss Sussex. An oratorical contest took place, the subject being, "Why should wo Vote No-License?" This item was keenly, contested, the Rev: Father Maples and Rev. A. Thompson judging tho contestants. Each speaker had ten minutes, the judges after retiring to confer awarding first place jointly to Messrs. Delahunty and Townsend, with Mr. Daniels as runner-up. Tho judges complimented all the speakers upon tho telling way they had delivered their, cases. Refreshments wero handed round by tho ladies.
