PROPOSED ROAD TO KHANDALLAH. ' A DEPUTATION. v The Onslow Borough Council met' last night. , Present: The Mayor (Mr. J.' G. . Harkness), Councillors Rier'nan, 1 Watson, Plimmer, Aplin, Fitzgerald,.' and tynsburg, . It was decided to 'write '"to ' for Railways asking for the abatement < ' a nuisance, alleged to bo. causcd by £ / throwing out of refuse from the Goveinme dining-car on the, Maiiawatu Company's -1 / press. ,' ' '• An offer by Messrs. Newton and .Sons,to giro the' Council' land for a septic; tank Yin return for free connection' of their property with the drainage system was accepted. > . A consisting of Messrs'; I<VG. Bolton and O.; K. Stuart; representing the. shareholders in the Cashmere Estate, Company, Ltd., waited on the Council. ' . ' Mr. Bolton stated that the object; of; ithe deputation was to discuss the question ; of ran access from the, main Hutt Road through " tile 'Company's property to Khandallah. T|ia Council's ougineer had stated that the route, : Which previously they' had suggested, / was . not so satisfactory as regards grade' as aii- . other routo i 'ayailable. ' Tile company, liow> over, had' a secoild route tootfor, -.'.which would be of better grade,' though morev eXpousiye of formation than that originally; submitted. If this was allowed;; to ,'bo'the case, he asked that the " Council 'should pay part of the cost of forming a road through the . property/ The;: Council injight iay >tha« the company must make. the road for its own sake. The property, however, was parti'...,, flat and partly—well, undulating. (Lauf ter.) The llat portion could be develop.. . ■ without access from the. Hutt Raad, and'; the Council did'not assist'to'form a new.l road; the company wouldy'ppstporis its' ctm- \ struction' till they . had disposed of all tho flat lands on their property,'and'we're ready i; to deal-with the unduiating portion. There waS, no doubt that tho l'oa'd was approved by the residents of Khandallah.' If the engineer should decide that tho proposed route was not better than that already, in. view, the company would subsequently, but not now, make the road .originally. Suggested. In view, of that, the company' • were' anxious to know what grade'the Council would agree to. The. formation of the road would be difficult and expensive, and ho asked that the company; should, be al- / lowed to make; tho' formation -through the high land;, with . a breadth,, say, of 18ft.,, v.'hich they were assured was ample, instead - . of the 26ft. required in respect of. that land. Tho road would not be a main road, so that this' was quite a/reasonablo concession., .If tho road was l to.-bo.a main road, ; it was fair that the Onslow Borough Council should assist the company to construct, it.j Mr; Stuart urged the value which the road would have in tho future, when there was a large population between Khandallah and Jplinsonvilfe. '-. ; . ■ - In .further, discussion,."- Mr. Bolton, ex-' pressed his confidence'that, wjieii 'thp' road was constructed,, ar railway "stop" station would be crected at ,its terminus. The, road and stationwould then ,be .additional reasons, for the construction of'.'the proposed cable tramway.' Then the district'would become' -another Kelburne,. and - the Council would have something ' 'on. : winch to levy rates. People could be taken there moro cheaply than they \ could bo taken to Kelburiie. ■ i ; ■. Tho deputation were thanked, and withdrew. ' Consideration of tho niattor was deferred. ' Accounts .amounting to £?43 Is. 6d. were . passed for payment. • ■ It was reported that applications had been received for building permits ,during the past seven weeks to tho valiie of' £6823.,
