The annual handicap tournoy of . this Wellington Chess Club commences this evening, with twenty entries, sections A and 13 each comprising ten players. "When the nino rounds of section-play liavo been completed, tho highest jcovcr's in each section will piny off in'a final*full-round tourney for. the Pcthel'ick Shield and other ..prizes. ' Regret is general that the donor of tho shield, Mr. E. AV. Pe'therick, has not recovered sufßciently from his recant illness to take part in this year's competition. Messrs. C. W. Tannei' and Gyles, jun., two former holders of tho shiold, are also non-starters on this occasion, lho. other past winners (Messrs. 'R. J. Barnes and H. .Tcssup)' are, however, taking part, and if either of these como ont first in tho current tourney he will win the shield outright. ' Tho pairing in the opening round is as follows Section A—W.' E. Mason v. Morris, Still 'v. Jessup, Fell v. F. AA 7 .-Collins, Fonhy v. Arden, .and Urwin v. Stanford. -Section B—Barnes v. Scott, Kelling v. Land, Bock v. S.'Mackay, Gyles, sen., v. Nops, and AA r . S. Anderson,v. Aslyby. .
