THE FAVOURITE COLOUR.
- Afterall (says, the Sydney " Daily Telegraph"), blue is, by ,far ''.the'-colour "of • the'moment. 7 You see, there are so manyhow many hundred is it?—of the shades .ofj this popular' tint, that a hundred women can / ba dressed in. blue, and yet no two of them. . alike. Beginning with navy, we run through sapphire and royal (with which latter shade, in conjunction with red and white, the shops aro very gay at present), wedgwcod, Saxo, Nattier, turquoise ciel, baby, perveuclio, cornflower, gentian, water-blue, and up to the very palest shado of -forget-me-not, all are blue, and all aro charming. There is a bluo so palo as almost to bo indistinguishable' from white.; There'is a navy so dark as to bo almost- indistinguishablo. from / ""-black. Another fact concerning bluo is "that the brunette, who formerly used to shun it, has taken to - soveral 'shades of it with 1 pronounced success./ AVith dark: eyes and bluo - black hair turquoiso is . very charming. But sallowness is a fatal b?r to bluo. / Pale', if you like, .-may be your tint, but no tingo of yellow must show next the bhieness of ribbon or jewel, or else the sallowness is increased tenfold, and the result is quite \ disastrous. One' of the most liked of the new , ■ shades, the diapers say, is rose du Barri, in which : thero are somo 1 lovely shades, also in vieux rose and terra cotta. Theso aro eminently for the dark woman, both by day and evening. Fair girls look very well in some pinks. Chestnut brown and copper are a nice change this winter from the bot-ter- , known colours. ' Cinnamon has had its trial. It looks immensely /-smart, but', only suits few. Violet, which, now that the real violets aro at last condescending in bloom, wo see to be an exact match .to tho flower,-never loses its hold as a charmingly refilled colour.
The Grand Duko of Ilesse is first cousin to the Prince of Wales, but a man of. widely different tastes. " Ho; sponds a groat : part of' the day playing the'piano, while one of his favourite recreations is liebdlowork, .which he does with great skill. It is an open secret that lie onco came a-wooing ono of the sisters of the Prince of Wales, but, to the despair of Queen Victoria, who was very favourable t-o,'the match, the lively young Princess and' her; .two' brothers mercilessly "chaffed" their' German cousin, for while they were in the'open air almost the whole day, the young; Grand. Duke of Hesse was oither sitting by .an ; embroidery'. frame or playing to his Royal graiidmotlier.
