THE BROWN COALS OP OTAGO. IHJ TELEGRAPH —rBEBS ABSOOUTION.) Christchurch,. June 8. The first research scholarship for Otago University has been awarded to Mr.' Alex. Gordon Macdonald; Associnte of the Otago School of Mines and Bachelor of Engineering. The subject of research chosen by tho successful scholar and approved of by the Minister of Education is tho investigation of the brown coals of Otago in relation to their geological occurrence, chemical and physical characters, mining and market conditions, present uses,' and economic possibilities.
