t St. Thomas's Schoolroom,. Newtown, was well filled last' 'evening, when Mr. H. N'. .Holmes, secretary of the Y.MiC.A., delivered one of the lectures organised by the City Council, his subject .being.Under the Stars and Stripes." :/Mr. Holmes visited Canada and thoiUnited States, and he'retumed with some excellerft views of placcs he had seen. The address was enlivened by vivid description, and interesting'anecdote, and the audience was very • appreciative. Mr. W. H. P. Barber, M.P., occupied the chair. Several views of San Francisco after tho earthquake were shown, also some 'interesting pictures of Vancouver and Victoria,, and a view of tho Princess Victoria, the steamer in which-the members of Parliament proceed from Vancouver- to the capital. _ ' <•'•. ... There were vast timber forests in the Western States, said Mr. Holmes, and hundreds of rivers were so full of logs on their way to the mills that one could hardly, see the water. Some very interesting views of the early Francescan Mission buildings were shown. They were built 120 years ago, and they are still inhabited. The next item consisted of views* of Los Angeles, California. Among the other views shown were the following:—The Mormon Tabernacle and Temple, ■ Denver-Rio Grande Canyon, Chicago University, Chicago Y.M'.C.A., Niagara, President M'Kinley's Monument, Statjie of Liberty (New York), City Hall, Madison Square Garden Theatre (of which Stanford White was - the architect),' the Waldorf Astoria, Brooklyn and Williamsburg bridges, the Flat Iron (twenty-five stories high), Stock Exchange, Harvard University (Boston), . Mrs. Eddy;s Christian Science. Tomple, Emerson's grave, ice hockey in Canada, tobogganing, Houses of Parliament (Ottawa), Winnipeg (the Chicago of Canada), Grain Stores, etc. The trip, concluded Mr. Holmes, was rich in variety of experience, and it gave excellent object-lessons of what had been accomplished in the past two centuries by tho American people. (Applause.) ' At the. conclusion of the address a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Holmes, on the motion of the chiirman.. g,
