(BY TELEGRAPH —-PRESS ASSOCIATION.} — * ■' STRUCK BY LIGHTNING. BUILDING TAKES FUtE. ' Auckland, Juno 6. During a heavy thunderstorm on Friday a house at Mount EoskiU, occupied by W. Pegler, was struck by lightning, which set ablaze an outhouse. The flames wore extinguished, but part of the outhouse/was demolished, . and some of the contents were burned. . ' A chimney of the house itself, in which the family were assembled, was thrown to the ground. The lightning passed through the room and out of the side window, and scooped a largo hole in the gravel outside. Pegler'a youngest daughter had a narrow escape, having vacated her seat in front of the fire-place just before the chimney fell. ■
LICENSING COMMITTEES. Woodville, June 6. The Pahiatua Licensing Committee sat hero yesterda,y. The police reports were favourable all round, except as to the Kumeroa and . Makuri Hotels," where improvements were required, and Herhertville, where it 'was vague. The; renewals of. the licenses of these three hotels were held over for three months. All the-others were granteii. • New Plymouth,' June 5.. The Egmont Licensing Committee met today at Waitara, and all licenses were lenewed, excepting that of the Bridge Hotel, at Waitara, to which the police objected on the grounds that the hotel" was improperly conducted, and that an- unlicensed partner was permitted to be in effect the keeper of the hotel, such person being the one to whom a certificate of fitness to hold a publican's license had been refused. Drunkenness was alleged against the licensee and Maori fre-r quenters. Evidence was called in rebuttal, and it was stated that a transfer of the license was to be effected. The Committee eventually adjourned consideration for a month.
REMANDED. Palijierstop North, June 6. George Wm. Taylor, cabdriver, was arrested this morning on a charge of criminal assault. It is alleged that tho : pffence' took place at one o'clock this morning at the stabjes where accused is employed. Accused was before the Court this morning, and remanded till Monday, hail being allowed—Taylor in £200, and two sureties of £100 each. ESCAPE AND RE-CAPTURE OF A PRISONER.. Lyttelton, Juno 7. • ! William Bell, who ,is serving a short sentence at Lyttelton. gaol for bicycle stealing, escaped from the inner courtyard this morning. Prisoner scaled the inside walls of tlio buildings; by means of some spiked railings, and lowered himself down the. outside wall ljy means of a tweoty-four-foot'line made' from a hanimock rope. He made his way: up the hillside, but was recaptured, after a slight resistance, behind the signal station. v Bell had only a month to serve to complete his sentence. He made an escape about a fort-, night ago, but was recaptured before going; far.' ' . . .. THE LATE GENERAL BULLER, ' Cheviot, Juno 7. In the course of a speech at Oxford on Friday night, the: Premier delivered a eulogism of the late General Sir,Redvers Buller, and stated that, on behalf of the people of the Dominion, he had sent a message of condolence'to Lady Buller. TRAVELLING STOCK. , Napier, June 6. . At. the annual meeting of. the Hawke'a Bay Society for the. Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the secretary was instructed to write to the Railway Department asking that facilities should be provided at railway stations for:watering travelling stock, and: a deputation was appointed to \wait on the Napier Harbour Board' in connection with the samo matter. . HASTINGS BOROUGH COUNCIL. Hastings, June .6. ' The Hastings Borough Council will forward the following remit to the. WESTPORT HARBOUR. BOARD.. •... . Westport, June 6. The Westport Harbour Board's monthly report for May shows that; the Westport Coal Company's output was 52,179 tons,'of which 51,231 tons were'for export; State Coal Mines output, 3791 tons; export, - 3557 tons'; briquettes, oiltput 1310 export 1303 toils; total output, 57,230 tons; export, 56,332 tons. Of. this amount 3584 tons were-shipped to foreign ports, viz., to Carolines 1382 tons, to. Sydney 2202 tdns. -The export of timber was 88,630 . superficial. feet. During the month. 103\ steamers, . representing ■' 56,573 registered tons, entered tho port, and >103 steamers and two sailer'si representing .57-,760 tons, left-.- The total tonnage for tho month was 114,333. Laqre'nsoni member for Lyttelton, in the course; of !a pre-sessional address to 'his constituents lait night, replied to thoj statements recontly mfj'de. that the, workers; of New Zealand wore iiot equal in efficiency to tho workers of'other countries, and quoted figures in,support of his'contention that tho New Zealand workman compared moro than favourably with the workman abroad. He dealt at length with the question of Socialism, and said that tho Opppsition party when approaching this subject seemed to go. out of their way to raise the Socialistic bogey. At the conclusion of his addresses was: accorded a hearty vote of thanks and confidence.
