QUEEN SUMMER.

It is" understood that the Wellington Art Gallery is in its extrejne infancy yet, and that it is hoped each year will find it growing rapidly. . Tho latest attempt to raise funds for the purchase of new pictures is by means of a very artistic entertainment to be given at tho end of next week in St. Peter's Schoolroom. Great preparations aro being made for this' and tho help of a largo number of students at tho Technical School has been enlisted, by Miss Sybil Johnson, who is stagemanaging the affair. Sho has composed and arranged three stories, which are to bo acted against dark hangings; but without words. The stories are "A Spring Idyll," "Pierrot and Columbino," and " Paolo and Francesca," and tho acting is to bo accompanied by music which has been composed by Miss Ethelwyn Kirk. Tho second part of the entertainment will consist of Walter Crane's beautiful masque, "Queen Summer," the story of a tourney between lilies and roses. Tho scenery for this is very good, and over sixty performers take part, all most picturesquely attired. The poem will be recited by Miss May Mason.

Most women walk, far too little. There is no doubt that tho march of civilisation and invention provides abundant excuse for laziness. Wo aro all apt to slip' quietly into the convenient motor or tram-car that has an aggravating habit of passing us whea wo aroijust beginning to ask ourselves how far off is our. destination. We palliate our conscience by saying to ourselves, mentally, that we aro thus saving both time and shoo leather. Somo of us, indeed, add nervo tissue to these two gains. But if wo laid down a firm and fast rulo that we must walk a certain prescribed distanco ovcry day wo would find that these three fancied saving clauses would bo outbalanced by tho gain in bodily, strength and mental vigour.

THE DESPOTISM OF LAW. Yon cannot escapo Natural Law. It is sometimes oven difficult to escape human law.
