DUNEDIN WINTER SHOW
THE OPENINC DAY. . .NORTH: ISLAND SUCCESSES; Tho Otago A. and P. Society's Winter Show (says a Press Association- -messago) opened yesterday in splendid weather, and with a record attendance. Tho quality of exhibits is. fully up to the standard of previous years, and' competition is' very keen, particularly in cheese and factory _ butter. A fine display was made by the Agricultural Department. The show was officially opened by. the Prime, Minister, who traced the progress of the Society since the first winter show in 1594, and also quoted statistics illustrating the steady headway' made by. tho province. Ho also referred to the good work being carried on by the Department of Agriculture, and went on to 6ay'that tho Government was anxious. to -provide an experiment farm for the South Island. Our special/Dunedin correspondent telegraphs that Mr. Singleton, Dairy Commissioner, says that the factory butter exhibited , shows an excellence which surpasses that of anything, that the graders ihave hithorto seen at a Dunedin show. There is a great uniformity in tho scores, and'tho quality is uniformly bettor, while practically all .the flavours aro comparatively clean, a fact which speaks for the keeping quality of the butters , represented. The body and texture of the butter evidence skill in manufacture, and are a credit to the managers. Theso remarks'reflect special credit on Wellington, because Cheltenham heads the list for points in two classes, and' is third in the other.
