INQUESTS.
INQUEST AT|LOWER HUTT. ■ An inquest was held at Lower Hutt yesterday afternoon' to' inquire into tho circumstances surrounding the death -of . a youn<* girl, aged three years and ten months,, named Alice Turner, daughter of Mr. James Turner, dairyman, Gear Island, who died from bums received on'' Sunday morning. 'Mr;< Riddell. Coroner, condiicted the ■ inquiry. It appeared ; from the. evidence given by Ellen Harriet Turnor, ' a fifteen-year-old sister of deceased, that' the' child was standing' in' front of a large open fire warming her hands in the dining-room, with her clothes, on, but unfastenep,' when the draught blew her dress over the'flames, and the child ran. out into the kitchen a mass of flames. The sister, with commendable presence of mind, at once caught up a sack and rolled the child in it, thus stifling the flames. The: mother, and father were out ' in' the milking-sHed, thirty!}yards..away'. ■/ The sister at once gave the alarm,'and the mother did all in her power for tho child. Dr. Hector was called in. and saw the child, but he at .once-formed'the opinion that the severity .of the burns 1 precluded recovery. The child died at 6 o'clock on Sunday evening. The , jury found that death: resisted from shock to the system caused by burns, and added a commendation to the sister for her presence of mind in applying the very best means to put out the fire. At - the inquest on the body of William Grindlay, found at Puni Creek on Sunday night, the. evidence showed that deceased was short-sighted and stumbled , into the creek on. his way home. A verdict was returned accordingly. Christchurch, June 1. An inquest held to-day touching the death of James Gent, who bad an arm injured in machinery at Aulsebrook and Co.'s biscuit factory on. March 25, and died'from the results, a verdict was returned in accordance with tho medical evidonce that death '■was due to septic absorption from an injury to the arm, the result of an.accident.
