MASTERTON DOG TRIALS.
— : —— ' , CONCLUDING DAY'S RESULTS.' "v' (BI TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL COUI'.ESI'OXDE.VT.) Masterton, May 31. Tho Masterton- CoHie Club concluded its annual dog trials yesterday in. drizzling, 1 cold weather,, but in every other way successfully. Mr. A. E. M'Leod's imported dog Moss .of Aucrum won the heading, driving; and yarding competition,'in which he put iup such a splendid performance. Mr. W:'-0; Ruther- " ford, ' tho judge, awarded him - maximum points in this event, and described his. yard> lug as as good an exhibition of style and - workmanship as one could wish to see at any 1 trial. ( , Mr. Rutherford also praised' the exhibition given by Mr.. J. M'Donald's Mac.,,., Hie three., dogs teams' match was won, by,' Mr. C. Hay's trio, Mao, Dick, and 'Slato, ' but the work all round was poor. Speaking to a Dominion representative at . tho close of the trials,-} Mr. Rutherford thought that all round the exhibition was as good as could • be-witnessed - anywhere. The exhibition .ia . the second-class hunt-away was not so .gobd, principally owing to the stubbornness of the ; sheep,-which evinced a desire to race back to the catching-pens. This sort of thing was • not so noticeable in the South Island, when merino sheep were used.. There was a veryexhibition in the heading, driving, and r yarding event for demonstrating the. intelli- ■ gence of the dog. . Moss of .Ancrum's exhibi- .< tion .was flawless, although ho -did not like the manner in which ho had been trained t° v li.o down every. two or three feet .when yarding. This method in open country would; very likely result in; sheep being, frightened. There was no doubt, however, that this dog showed wonderful control when yarding. Mr. Rutherford pointed l out that, a number of dogs at the trials had been en- • tored in wrong classes. For instance, a dog , which should have been entered in.the.head--ing,. yarding, and driving competition, where he is not supposed to bark, would. be en- ' tared,-in a' hunt-away, where noise ; is ro-,. garded-as one -of the chief characteristics. l . There were also cases where dogs were entered in silent classes, and- barked the whole time. .. The trials, .which require a large amount of superintendence, were admirably managed iby ■ t)ho . Marshall (Mr. W. Welsh) arid tho' secretary. (Mr. G. R, Sykes), assisted by a small army, of enthusiastic stewards.-• The , final results were as-follow:— HEADING, DRIVING, and YARDING. head ; and . bring back 200 yards; drive through ring drive (75 yprds); through , one set of hurdles 8 feet apart; drivo 75' yards; and;yard,in-peri ; oEfour hurdles hurdle to be used, as a gate, and may bo r used as a wing), dog and worker tpvkeep. behind,.sheep, and;-follow them'through ' L ur j? 3 ' tjnie. allowed,•--lStriin;-'..;-Points-. • Heading .7, :■ bringing- -back - 7,-.-driving 8,.-" '■yarding 8, command -10;:,maxiriium', .40 1 points.
