. —rv — SATURDAY'S MATCHES. Tho championship hockey matchcs wore continued at tho Athletic Park and Day's Bay in fhio weather on. Saturday afternoon. UNITED V. VICTORIA COLLEGE. Tho match between United and Victoria College (perhaps tho two best teams on their present showing) at tho Athletic Park was fairly interesting, but it was marred to some extent by a little rough play. For a while it was oven, but the Beds (Uniteds) soon pressed their opponents, and a score was only averted by good play, on the part ol' tho defending goalkeeper. In a few minutes Reds again pressed, and . Birkett drovo through. Tho goalkeeper stopped the ball, but it glanced through'the posts from his boot. T. Strack shortly afterwards equalised'for tho College. From a bully at tho College twenty-five, the ball was well' passed to Smytho, who ma'de the scores 2 to 1. After a tussle at tile post, Birkett again got through. ' Tho score was 4 to 1 when tho whistle blew for half-time. Tlio second' spbll- had only run a miriuto or two whon Beoro ' (College)' added to his side's J? A determined struggle took place in tho Collegians i territory, and 011 the ground of obstruction the referee awarded the College a penalty goal. The last score .was made by Matthews (United), and the Rods thus won by 5 to 3. It cannot be said that either side played a good game, but tho United men were too good for their opponents. Tho Collegians played a hard game, but they could not win. Beoro (College) worked as hard as any two of. his' men, but _ they wero not alw t ays ready to support him. . ,The' play was not fast; that was quite impossible, as the ground was very lumpy. IVESLEY v. THORNDON. In tho game,\Wesley v.. Thorndon,-the play was willing from the bully, but Wesloy were first to break. away, and this' young and promising team • notched first goal, Smith being the shootist. They continued to attack; but Thorndon woko up and Hunt scored for them. A little time afterwards Keys shot truly for Wesley. Early, in the second half Foote scored for Thorndon, and thus again equalised matters. But Wesley were not to be denied, and once again Smith shot for them. This was followed almost immediately by another goal, which Keys appropriated, and try as they would Thorndon could not recover .lost ground, having to accept a 4 to 2 defeat. The referee was Mr. H. B. Walton. VIVIAN v. Y.M.C.A. Y.M.C.A. were unable on this occasion'to repeat their performance against Wellington, being defeated by a margin of one goal, after making a game effort. The opening •saw little of note. . Y.M.C.A. 'wore'.first to draw blood, Donovan (left wing) hitting between the uprights. - No further score resulted till after half time. From a smart, attack Thompson then hit a goal for Vivian,' and after that Loder (Y.M.C.A.) followed up a. long hit by Holmes, and sent in a hot one, which_ the goal-keeper saved. But not to, be denied Loder again got going, arid this timo hit between the uprights. Y.M.C.A. came away again,_ and R. . Parton scored— 2—2. Near the finish, however, Vivian made a spurt, and Collins .of theirs shot their third goal, putting them ono goal ahead. Mr. Morpeth,was.referee. KARORI V. WELLINGTON. For the first ten :minutes an equal fight was waged. Gradually the Karori forwards got down to .the .Wellington goal, and after one or two unsuccessful efforts Willis, one of their forwards, scored. For a time Wellington held their own, but' towards the end of the spell seemed to pass under a cloud, and. Karori,;, took ~: _ advantag^,.: , of. .the opportunity to score: two more goals, the first boing ;hit by ; Putnam, and: thei second by Davies.. TlietspelLerided- withouOurtlier ad--dition. Wellington woko up in tho . second half, and had one.or two unsuccessful shots. The pace right to.; the-finish was fast, and the play full of incident, but neither side could, score.Karori halves were their ..outstanding feature, as compared, with : their opponents' play, and their hitting was clean and . sure; The result of the game .was thus 3-0.
