A pica of guilty was entered by an eldorly man named Timothy Donovan, to a chargo of indecency in Harbour Street. A conviction and fine of £5, in default 21 days' imprisonment, was imposed. A young yuan pleaded not guilty■ to a chargo of being the father of a certain illegitimate child born on March 13, 1908, and of having failed to support tho child. After hearing the ovidonco His Worship dismissed tho information without prejudice. Mr. Kelly appeared for complainant, and Mr. P. W. Jackson for defendant. For iiisobrioty : James Cameron was convicted and fined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment, arid Annio Dunn and Andrew Taylor wero each conviotcd and fined 10s:, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. A first' plFondor, who failed to appear, was convicted and fined 10s., two others were fined os., two convicted and discharged, and ono conviotcd and ordorcd to pay medical expenses, £1 12s. 6d. ■ ' BY-LAW CASES. , James Carson was convictcd and fined 10s. and costs 75., in default 48 hours' imprisonment, for having, on- April 7, attempted to drive a vehicle across tho Davis Street Railway crossing, when r an engine was approaching within half a mile of tho crossing. ■ Tho same defendant was convicted and ordered to pay court costs'7s. for having, on April 7, failed to comply with • the direction "Stop! Look out for the ongine" before crossing the railway lino at' Davis Street. For allowing .a vehicle'tu remain Binding ill Donald M'Lean Street' on May 13 for a longer time than reasonably necessary for loading or unloading goods, Thomas Jackson was. convicted and finod 55., and costs 75.,. in default 24 hours' imprisonment, and similar • penalties wore imposed on Charles Lee, James Patrick, ' M'Cluado, arid Wm. Spittlehouse, for like offencos to the above on tho same date, and at the same place. William Taylor, who failed to appear, was convicted and, fintd 10s. and costs '75., in default 48 hours' imprisonment, for driving ri-j vt 10 ? round the, corner of Green and Riddiford Streets at other than a walking' pace. Percy Tonks. was convicted and fined ss. and costs /s., in default 24 hours' imprisonment, for haying driven a rehicle round the corner of Riddiford and Arney Streets at other t|ian a walking pace. M'Arthur, S.M.) , , ASSAULT IN AN HOTEL. _ Frank r Evans was charged that on May A), at Wellington,'he did unlawfully assault I'ranois Newman with intent to cause him actual bodily harm.- 1 Chipf Detective M'Grath conducted the case for the prosecution. Newman, cellarman at tho Occidental Hotel, deposed that he was in the bar ?r on 1 about 9.25 on the evening of May, 23. Accused was in,'tho bar for somo time, and witness went up to him and asked him to put a jug belonging to the houso ho had m his hand on . the counter. Accused would not put it back, and said he was going to buy it, but was told that it was not for sale. Later accused struck witness over tho left, eye with the jug, knocking him' down and cutting his eyo severely. Accused ran away, and witness had his eye dressed ,by Dr. Gilmer. .Witness next saw accused ontho Sunday morning on board the scow Echo, on coming ashore fromwhich vessel' accused was arrested. • Later accused/ asked' witness if ho would square the thing up if lie. (accused) paid tho doctor's expenses, but witness informed him that the matter.,was out of his hands, tho police having taken it over. ' ™r. H., A. Gilmer deposed that ho dressed , tho wound over Evans's eyo on May 23, two stitches being put. in. Witness would .say tho wound was a dangerous one, and could have been caused by : a blow with tho jug (produced)., The wound was progressing all right at-present, but witness could not guarantee :i. ! John Neason, porter at. the Occidental Hotel, gave'evidence' as to having seen ac- • cusea with the jug in'his hand just previous to tho assault. ?•. Detectivo Lewis stated that ho arrested accused on May 24. Accused said ho knew nothing about the charge, but on arrival at tho police station had a conversation with complainant, about tho niattcr, and asked Inm if ho would withdraw tho information if modical oxpenscs were uaid. Accused pleaded guilty," and was committed to tho Supremo Court for sejitencel' ' ; ' A CIVIL CASE. . , (Beforo Dr. A. M'Arthur,-S.M.) Tho adjourned case of'tho Wellington and »anganui Steam Packet Co. v! J. J. Burke .and Co., wool merchants,' was advanced another stage.. Plaintiffs claimed for £66 18s., balance alleged to be due for freight for the conveyance ofi wool from Wellington to Aapior.
