POLICE GASES. (Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.) . .•THEFT OF TOOLS. ' Alexander Swancon • was charged on two separate informations with tho theft of " a jointer plane valued at 155., the property of, Amos lleaton, and with tho theft of a jointer plane, ..valued at 10s., the property of one, Gunderson. Both offences were alleged to have taken place between May 14 and 15. Defendant. pleaded not guilty. ' Evidence was givon uy complainant, Gunderson, who said he left the piano in a partially erected house near tho Athletic Park one evening, and inissed it next morning. Amos Meaton gave similar evidence, and stated further that a'ccuscd had applied to him on tho job for ' work. Caroline" Ellice, secondhand dealer, deposed that accused sold tho planes to her, giving the name of Alexander M'Dougal. Constable Taylor, who' arrested accused, stated that ho gave tho name of Alexander-M'Lcod. 1 ,' Accused said the planes had beer) given to him when he was .under the influence of liquor. and sentence of seven days' imprisonment ivas entered on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. • MAINTENANCE. Wm. Alfred Bar •ow was convicted and sentenced to one month's imprisonment for failing to comply with an order of tho Court to contribute 18s. per week towards the support of bis throe children. The same defendant appeared on separato charges of failing to support his three children, inmates of the Wellington llecciving Homo. In each caso ho was ordered to pay 6s. tier week to the Clerk of the Magistrate's Court, Wellington, towards the support of tho children. - r
