An enthusiastic public meeting was held hero last night, when resolutions wero passed congratulating Ministers on the completion and opening of the extension of tho railway to Waikohu, 23i milos from Gisborne, and urging tho more rapid construction of.'tho line to enable it to tap tho timber, forests at Motti. Tho Hon. J. M'Gowan attended tho meeting, the Hon. J. Carroll being absent owing to indisposition. .Replying, tho Minister stated that seventeen railways were in course of construction, and these could not bo carried on without money. He, however, would bo prepared to fight for a fair share for tho Gisborno railway. Ho defended tho Govommont's prudence in adopting n nioderato borrowing policy, and mentioned tho fact'with pride that for tho present railway constructions tho Government did not need to go to tho Old Country 'for a single shilling. Ho recognised the need for more adequate rolling stock, and would make representations in favour of the lino being supplied with a more poworful engino than the ono which failed to pull tho tram up the slight incline that day till tho people had got off to rcliove the load.
