THE QUEENSLAND TREK,
IS IT SERIOUS? PARLIAMENTARY RETURN • SUGGESTED. A ' newspaper correspondent writes: — "While, the State is welcoming immigrants with £50 each at tho front dear, a largo number of tho best of her settlers aro scuttling out. at tho back with. their thousands and tons of thousands. The number of sottlers and the amount of money that have left the Dominion since tho first of tho year would be a -most 'interesting and valuable return, and might open the eyes of-doctors as .to. the seriousness of - tho. matter.',' •
' 'The Pastoralists' Review,'' commenting on tho letter, says:—"Such a return,-as our correspondent asks for, should bo obtainable through Parliament. > It is inevitable that tho anti-capitalistic legislation should tend to- drive away some of the ■ best of the younger generation of New Zealandcrs, but wo" think tho high price of land in Now Zealand at the present moment, and the young men's natural, desire to see strange countries, also have somothing to do with-it.. : Thus, a ■similar exodus is constantly going on- from Victoria to either Now, South "Wales ■ and Queensland, although these States, aro more labour-ridden than Victoria. , But land is ofieaper, and young men aro apt to' think every place batter than their own."
