ORGAN RECITAL : To judgo by ,tho, attendarico at-Mr. Bar.riott's' organ rccijtal, last evening, 'tlicro'does not seem room for much doubt as'to the success of, tho■ City Council's .enterprise in initiating a series of municipal organ recitals. The lown Hall was comfortably filled by a most appreciative audience. Tho recital opened with Bach's colossal" "Preludo and 1 Fu'guo in C Minor," a composition which gives the. fullest scope to the, powers' of "a great organ. , Tlio finale is tremendous, and can only be adequately reproduced on a very large instrument. ;Th'o'item was'heartily applauded.-: Then followed a beautiful little composition; "At ; Evening" (Dudley Buck), which had to ho .'repeated. Handel's fav-; ourito minuet from, tlio .overture to the oratorio of "Samson 11, ' followed; tho characteristic Handelian music very popular,with, tho audienco. A striking movement from Ruick's "IHuo Concerto," which derives its namo from tho predominating influence of tlio flut-o-stop throughout tho composition, camo next, and was onoored. Rheinberger's beautiful "Idyll" was anothei:, successful number. Of tho remaining threo'compositions, two of them, Wagner's famous "Tannhauser" overture, and Mendelssohn's, spirited "Cornelius Maroh" were admirably adapted to reveal tho orchestral powers of tho organ. Tho great ."Tannhauser"- "composition, .was. a veritable triumph, and its finale, tho "Chant of Pilgrims," formed' a'magnificent"climax to I tho production. Following this tremendous burst, of sound,' camo Thome's quiet littlo melody, "Simple Aveu," and tlio "Cornolius March" concluded tho recital. , "THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL." At an early Jio'ur • yesterday' morning, a number of people began to gather outside the Dresden, where the plans for "Tlio Julius Knight season,"which commences at the Opera House 6n Saturday evening, woro to be opened for six nights, and tho booking was exceptionally heavy, closo oil two thousand seats boiiig secured by theatre-goers._ Tho opening production, "Tho Scarlet Pimpernel," will bo staged here for tho first time. Tlio Baroness Orczy's book, from, which tlio play has been adapted, has been printed into half a dozen different tongues, and the dramatic version' has had a remarkable career from the moment it was placed oil tho stage.
