SOCIAL AND PERSONAL.
. Tho stall-holders nt tho Dominion bazaar and their assistants did a great deal of hard work, not only during tho fortnight that tho bazaar lasted, but in preparation for it, and in recognition of their services a dance is to bo, given for them at the Sydney Street Schoolroom on Tuesday, June 2. ; Those who have attended debates at Victoria College, have often been constrained to oommont on tlio silcnco of the women students in'debate. Occasionally ono more .daring than tho others will arise, to voico her convictions, and cloquontly "will she do it, but as_ a _ rulo they are content to listen and criticise. It is-with tho idea of remedying this state of things that it has been decided to form a Women Students' Debating Society, which will meet an hour earlier than tho ono open to all students,-and there hold short debates on all sorts of subjects. It is hoped they will not confine themselves to the subjects in which they think they ought to be interested, but will, tako up real live matters, even if they have not xhe dignity of economic:or political questions. The chief good of a debating society is that it : teaches .peoplo to express themselves logically and effectively, not that it shall provido a rechauffe of other peoplo's opinions, and "Dominica" is inclined to think that a debate on such a subject as "That tho influenco of Marie Corelli's novels is pernicious" would bb of more real good than a dry academic discussion as.to whether Cromwell or Luther exerted the ■ greater influenco on his time. That is ,to start with,..there is no saying where, oneo set going, they might stop.
