LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
A TRAMWAY MYSTERY. Sir, Whore aro'tho brains of tlio Wellington detectives? It should, suroly not be hard for them to find the conductor of the tramcar off which tho late Josoph Petrio fell, on Monday, April 6. I believo it is tho rule for timesheets for tho running of tho cars to.be in use, and also that tho oonductor : or motorman has to lioto his time at different points on tho route, and .then hand tho time-tablo in to the. management on return to tho terminus. Tho witnesses who wero on tho car could help th© police as to the time, and also perhaps tho destination of the car. "With this knowledge, and with tho time-tables in their hands, a number of cars would bo suspected, tho conductor being picked by tho witnesses from tho conductors of these cars.' —I am, etc., PRO BONO PUBLICO. May 13.
SET BACK TO NO-LICENSE.
Sir,—l should lifco to tell "M.0.D." that w ani r nG fr'h(s l ' an enemy to No-Licenso, nor a disappointed aspirant, for tempcranc© support at somo by-gono election." I belong, and have always done so, .to tho rank and file of the* Prohibitionists. *'Disappointed aspirants" aro not to.bo found there, and for tho benefit of "M.0.D." I should like to tell him to look around somo of tho so-called temperance leaders and see if ho can find any there. I can. I am pleased to hear the New Zealand Alliance had nothingto do with the recent' local apathy—there is hope for No-License in other parts, anyway. Lot mo say emphatically I am.not aware, as "M.0.D." suggests,, "that. Mr. • Aitken'was brought out against his .wish, and came out at the imperative demand of Messrs. Duthie, Robertson, Nathan, and company." Let mo further say, it would take more than "M.O.D.'s" bare statement to convince me of so ridiculous and senseless a position. Can hoitell mo if any tomporance leaders or any prominent temperanco people were members of the deputation that' waited on' Mrl.' Aitken, asking him ' to' stand for Mayor? "M.0.D." appears to object to the threo gentlemen mentioned above, and evidently prefers "tojbe dragged at the chariot wheels' of Mr. Hislop, supported by Mr. T. K._ MacdonaJd and Mr.' Hamilton Gilmer's "New Zealand Times"—a combination that will do much for .temperance. No; tho No-Licehso leaders have been outgenoralled in this fight;- and "M.O.D."does not liko it to bo pointed out. If he cannot see how the liquor- party have gained a victory for themselves, over Mr. Hislop's. return, then I am sorry for him.—l am, etc., DISGUSTED!' May 14.
