CHINESE AND THE POLL TAX.
ALLEGED EVASION. (FY TEIiEOIurn—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Pnimcrston North, May 13. A Chinaman was brought before the Stipendiary Magistrate this morning to show causo why lie should not pay the poll-tax. When the c'aso was called on, it was discovered that tin information for such an offonco must bo laid within six months of tho date of committal of the offence, and as the alleged offence was of much' earlier date it was not possiblo to proceed. It was suggested that it would ba a comparatively easy matter for a new arrival from China to got a safe hiding amongst bis compatriots for so short a period as six months, and that an amendment of tho law was necessary. Tho police had yet another griovanco .against the accused, in that lie was a dosortor from the cable-repairing steamer Iris. Tho alleged offenco occurred in 1004. Accused admitted it, and was remanded to Auckland to join tho steamer.
