NOT THE NEW ZEALANDER,
In the "Otago Witness" of May 6 I noticed the following paragraph:—
L...H.. Hewitt' did not commence his second season in England too luckily.- Ho did not have a mount on the first' or second day of tho Lincoln meeting, which opens tho season, -but on the third day he rode Primavora in the final raco on the card. His mount showed tho way to tho home turn, but ran wide,' and at tho finish could only get a good third,, with' heads dividing the placed, horses. Judging .from, reports Hewitt would have; won if ho had succeeded in keeping close, to the rails." Tho . samo paragraph appears in tho "Weekly Press" of yesterday, and were the facts correct it v/ouid clearly indicate that L. H. Hewitt was, not in his best form for he does not usually throw, away races at the turn. Tho paragraph, however,. does the Now Zealand, jockey an injustico, as tho following clippings from the London " Sportsman " will.show:— " Tho proceedings wero brought to a close with tho Kesteven Plato, which, only attracted a party of five to tho post. Of these O'Cullen was a strong order throughout. The race fuxnisliixl a'pretty and exciting finish, Randal] on O'Culledi boing soen to great advantage, and .winning. Dy 'a head from Claudian; who finished' a like distance in front of Primavera."—March 2G. ■ "The finest finish of the three days took place iii thb Kesteven .Plato, in which tho backers of. Primavera wero' unlucky, fpr,"- in spito of losing somo lengths by making a wide swoop into the straight, she was only beaten two heads from O'Cullen, who won aft-er ,a .close finish;"— Also March 26. •. . 1 "In the' Kesteven Plato at- Lincoln on Wednesday Primavera was ridden by A;'L. Howitt, an apprentice. attached to the Bedford Lodgo' establishment:"—March 27.
NOTES AND COMMENTS,
■ Tho Hawera and Ashburton' meetings will bo continued to-day. Mahara, nui, : winner of the Hawera Cup, is a half 'brother ,: to 'Mallet. . Ho, is now-six years' old, up'til} the present has not been .a largo stake eaVner, his only successes la-st season'being in tho: Waverloy Cup and Momobaki .Stakes at tho 'Waverley mooting. Ho is evidently, in. good form, just now, for his supporters were very confident about his chances yesterday,,but tho field lio beat, was not'.of ! much Vccount.,'' r! ' . R.; Barlow has., been rather., unlucky with. "Nukutihi. ;;Tho,Daystor. gelding won a race at Trentham last winter,; and early in tho present season hq'-,showed good .form, among tlio hacks, but there was'generally something just too good for him. He seems-to have lost form . recently, and, as ho broko a<-fotlock yesterday, : his. racing - career is probably at an end. •.. . ,v., .- , - Burton; 1 winner, of the ; Tawhiti Scurry, was successful'in a hack race at Hawevain February, and at-'.Opuuako ; in March,. but last season, though started, on eight qe'easions,, lie never managed;to..win, a raco. ',>./* , ■Progeny of Sylvia Park have now won tho Hawera Cup., two years in succession; Compass, who ran second to Mount Coolc in' the; 'hurdles 1 at' Hawo'ra yesterday, claims •in engagement in tho Century Hurdles, with Ost. lib. Ho woii' at Patea on Easter Monday; and. ran second to Defeat at Foilding the' following' day;-,.' He seems'to bo coming on fast. . , •Mount'Cook,-Who is a fine big stamp,of. a horse,;:,showed good form- at Foxton .'and Pahiatua/i'n. January.. - He is a first-class jumper,- and -is tho sort, that one would expect .to, develop, into a top-notcher. ■ - Silkweb, who . won, tho ' Lorigbe'nch Handicap- at -Ashburton ■ yesterday,- was third- in ..the samo event last year. Silkweb is a. halfbrother to Stepchild, who woii a hurdle raco in Adelaide last month. '
• During the brief.period that tlio imported horso' Benzoin was -at the stud: he sired ono or two really good horses, and everyono of his .stock seems, capable of,,winning races. Lady Orizoin, who won -tlio Grove Farm Handicap at Ashburton, is. a four-year-old chestnut jnar.o .by..the Friar's Balsam' horse, and- sho is evidently speedy,' for tho horses opposed; to her yesterday wero quite up to the average.. .. . She had. two easy wins at the Waimato meeting, in; Ma-ch. ' Bon Glitters is ono of tho Benzoins that has not raced yet. . Ho ig from' an Apreinont mare; and, as a two-year-old did some excellent gallops on tho Riccarton track, but ho got 'into.- a wire fence ono morning, and wis badly injured. Ho has made good recovery now,-and-may be racing in hack events in this district beforo. long. < ' ■ As- - .a three-year-old the Stopniak maro Cross Battery was very brilliant. Sho was started fotii'-times, winning three of her races and being placed second on tlio other occasion. Her principal win Was, in the Great Eastor Handicap. Last season' further brilliant -were 'expected from her,- but thoy were not forthcoming. Sho ran second in tho Jcckey' Club Handicap at''-Riccarton,' and second *in the Dunedin Cup,_ but' that wa-s as near as she got to winning. Yesterday sho scored a long overduo win in tho Aslibnrton Handicap, and this, coming so soon after Sea King s recent victories at Dunedin and Trontham; will bo gratifying to Mr. H.' F. Nicoll, who had not previously been having much luck. '; Quito a number of tho candidates wcro solidly backed in the Telegraph Handicap, at Hawera yesterday, and , tho bookmakers wouldbe on the right side over the result, for, in addition to Kirsty and- Golden Dream, there were.two other's—Biirton and Supplement:—which carried r, dealjaf money. ■In India small ; owners •'aro steadily increasing, and, somo of tho. writers in* that country arc evidently of-opinion that that is • a desirable state of- affairs. The next dovelopment; will probably bo -the man battling for a-living-,with a couplo of leased horses,. and, taking. Australian experiences for it, India could well do without him.— "Sydney Referee." , ■ .
