HUTT DEBATING 'SOCIETY. ■ The annual meeting cf the Hutt Literary and Berating Society was held' iii tho Town Hall last night, when the balance-sheet arid report were- passed. The ■ accounts showed a credit balance of £1 Os. Bd., and the balance of/ assets over liabilities was represented by the same sum. The Rev. J. Jones was in the chair, and he reviewed the work of the society for the past year. Good results had been obtained. Tho papers rea'd by members had been' of an interesting nature, but the great waut was tho.lack of actual literary effort. The Chairman'appealed to the meeting for a new vigour in tho'.coming year. The following office-bearers were clcctedPresident, Bev. J. Jones; vice-presidents, Dr. Purdv, and Messrs.- H. Rix-Trott and H. Von Zc-dlitz; hon secretary, Mr. W. J. Gardiner; committee, Mr. P. Evans, : Miss Rix-Trott, Mr. E. 0. Jackson, Mrs. Cox and Miss Jones. It was decided that tho opening meeting slioul d take place oh May 20, when tho subject of debato will bo "Tliat athletic professionalism is detrimental to'-truo sport." .-Dr. Purdy spoke at some length oil the advantages' to bo gained, by mombers taking part ill a discussion on .non-political subjects. Mr. RixTrott,also spoke. ■.
'Mr. 1 -Sidney' Nicholls, 'of tho Greytown Working Men's Club,, who has just- been "appointed to tho-position of chief steward of tho Potorio Working Men's Club, was at'one t-ime very well known in Rugby football circles' in Wellington.For several years, ho was captain of tho Poneko' Club, which then possessed the most poworful club fifteen in New Zealand. Mi*. Nicholls was also an enthusiastic cricketer. At tho present tirno his tastes run to bowls. ST. DAVID:S CHURCH BAZAAR, Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P., opened tho St; -David's Presbyterian Church bazaar in tho 'Oddfellows' Hall on Tuesday afternoon. Tho hall is decorated vedy nicely' with evergreens, flags,, etc;,'and presents 1 ii" very attractive appearance. Tho various'stalls: are prosified"'over' by Mosdames Thomson, Arcus, Lodder, Duncan, Hope, .Hay,- 'Walker,'- Cotton, Pringlo,. Gilmouri Rushton, Russell, Bennottj.and Misses Horne, Carter; Cotton, Bennett (2), Roilgors, Arous, Allehdor, arid Thomson; - Mrs. Morris , is" also arranging tho tableaux, 1 and tho 'audiorico showed 'its' approval by. tho. hearty-applauso. -: Tho young people's stall has a host of useful articles,, all tho result of sover'al months' work by:'tlio Sunday 'School scholars. Tho Citizens' Band /played from the Post Officii to the hall, and gave a. selection in tho ha.ll. Miss R. JoHnson played a< piano- solo; and tho school children gavo a chorus, Miss Corson taking tho solo-very nicely. Master Donaldson danced ,-a. Highland . fling in fine style.. Mr. Sutherland, piper, from town, supported the. music, and' Piper Dewhurst trained littlo Rachel M'Whirter, nine, years old, to dance -the Scottish national danco. Tho management liavq every reason. to. be pleased with, the support. ' . ThoPetone Catholic Club's Debating Society spent a pleasant evening, last night, the subject for .debato being "Was .England justified in bringing about tho Boer War?'-' Mr. F. Jackson.took the affirmativo; and,-Mr. D. Jones tho negative. 'After both, gentlemen handling tho. subjcct well, Mr. J. Ryan, chairman, ruled that honours -were equal.
