PLANT BREEDING.
' Dr. 1 Cockaync, director of State plant breeding, speaking to a " Press" interviewer (says our Christchurch correspondent) said that during his recent botanic survey of the Tongariro National .Park, he was able to pay some attention to the variation of the phormium' tcnax in the wild state; Certain varieties growing in the neighbourhood of Karioi showed characteristics which ho had never noticed i<before.' . It is this extreme variability of the plant which leads him to'believo that considerable changes may be; brought, about artificially in no very long period of time. A great deal has been done by the Agricultural Department to . bring into one place, with the aid of Mr. M'Gregpr, as many varieties, especially those prized by the Maoris, as ; possible. . It is from ,this material in the first place that he hopes to make a beginning. ; He purposes, as soon as possible, to write an account of'the variation. in phormium, bringing up-to-date as .early as lie can all ,that is available on tho subject, and going into detail concerning the microscopic structure of the leaf, which, of course, has ; the'_ strongest bearing possible on fibre, production. , , , .
