Accused,. who was a flaxmill hand, came into town on Friday with his mates, aud had been drinking all day Saturday. He had caught hold of . tho young Woman in Rangitikei Street. The captivo screamed, and accused was detained until tho arrival of tho police by Messrs. Pcrrin and Dixon. Tho Bench decided that tho ease was ono of common assault, and inflicted a fine of 55., with witnesses' oxpenses. , Tho Manawatu Boxing Association'intends to send a team of four to compcto at Wellington on May 16 and 17. Soveral others will also make the. trip. . ■ A great deal of interest at present centres in the "Elijah" festival, to bo held in the Opera House on Juno 17. Tho soloists are Mrs. Burns (Christchurch), Miss Caldow, and Messrs. Prouse and E. J. Hill (Wellington). Tho* total number of performers, including tho orchestra and chorus, wiil bo about 220. ■■ . Tho newly-formed Savago Club will bo opened on May 23. A Wellington party will supply tho programme for tho opening night.

A.. meeting of creditors in tho bankrupt estate of J. W. Hallett, painter, was. hold before the District Official Assignee (Mr. W. li. Chonnells) yesterday. Tho dolicicncy in the 'estate, in which there were no assets, was about £116. The bankrupt, on oath, said he started business a year ago with £8 capital, and had worked at contract painting since, finding it unprofitable. Several contracts with AVaterbouse, of Martinborough,'were for,various largo sums. A payment nindo to Messrs. Pain and, Kershaw, of-Martinborough, by Mr. Watorhouse, allegedly on behalf of tho bankrupt, was questioned by tho solicitor for tho District Official 'Assignee as a preferential payment. It 'was decided to look further into the matter. Only two creditors woro present, and the bankrupt could, niake no offer. Tho meeting was adjourned sine die. James, better known as Mickey, Dalton was committed .yestorday by Mr. W. P. James, S.M., to' the Pakatoa Inebriates' Homo for two years for habitual drunkenness. . , Chas. Leckio was sentenced by ,two Justices of tho Peaco to one week's imprisonment for the theft of a, bottle of whisky. : A.icivil case,-in which W. Saunders, d Alfredton, sued J. M'Dougall, sheep-farmer, fbr"£7o, balance alleged to be due on a forward; delivery salo'i of 400 sheep, was. .heard before Mr.: W. P. James, S.M., at yesterday. Tho chief question in dispute was whether defendant was compelled to accept within 1 tho time alleged by plaintiff to be the proper contract time, aild it was also contended that Messrs. Dalgety and Co. were the principals in the sale instead of agents, as'was at first set up. Judgment was reserved. : ,Mr. H, N; Holmes, secretary of the Wpllin'gton'Ol.C.A., was to nrrivo at Masterton last evening, and to-day intends to limit him-' self, practically, to eight hours, in'which to raise £400, which amount l is the balance required to .furnish a fund of £750 to provido a local Y.M.C.A. with an organising secretary for a term of three years. In order to have every chanco of collecting tho money at tho ■ rote of nearly £1 per minute, Mr. Holmes will be provided with an automobile and 'a chauffeur. .Ho'fully expects to liavo attained his objective by 5 p.m., \md to return to Wellington by the-late train.

At the monthly meeting of tho Pahiatua County Council, held on Saturday afternoon, ■a suggestion from the Public Health Department that the .Council should contribute ; towards tho salary of a president, sanitary .inspector, was agreed to. ' A. resolution passed' as a. special order at a former meeting, altering tho boundaries of ridings and representation, wa-sfconfirmed. Accounts amounting to £927 Bs. 7d. were, passed for payment. In a discussion on hospital maintenance and charitable aid, it was pointed out thai.tho Council-contributes this year £541' lis., or about an eighth of the rates. ! Tho death took placo early on Saturday morning of Mrs. Robert Reay at tho 'early age of 31. Tho deceased lady was well known in the district.,. . Mr. C. E. M'Shanc, of the Bank of New South Wales, who has been transferred to tho Wellington, branch,. was entertained on Saturday evening, and presented with a purse of sovereigns. ' A test match was played, on, Saturday afternoon between representative teams of t-he Bush . It is probable that the road from the Tij Horo railway station to the sawmill will be closod for heavy traffic. v Service was held 011 Sunday at the Sanatorium by tho Eov. Charles Roberts, when tho patients had the pleasure of listening to 1:1 .earnest; and eloquent address. Local sportsmen, up to the present, have not secured big bags, but in ono or two in;tature's sportsmen report a fair amount of pistime.

Tlie contract tinio for the erection of tlvo Foxton-Shannon bridge was up at tho end of last month, but owing to tho Marino Board requiring tho superstructure to be raised 15 inches, and to the. fact that the piles had to bo lengthened, thero is likely to bo some delay in the completion of tho work. • Shannon Seniors dofeated Levin' Wanderers at Shannon last Saturday by 5 points to nil. Tho game was fast considering tho wet w.cather lately, and was contested in 'a friendly spirit. Tennnhill, Kelly, and Robinson wore conspicuous amongst tho local forwards, though all the, forward lino played well." Day, Timing, arid I'erkinson showed good form amongst the backs. .
